This is more like it! Great specs for the money, so long as you're happy with 8GB RAM. For most here, I'd imagine that 8GB is enough, although I do know that some of you would be looking at more heavy handed tasks, where 16GB would be your bare minimum requirement. The RAM is not upgradable.

Considering the price history of this and it's the 512GB NVMe model, the price here is pretty good right now.

Delivery is free and you can choose the week day / Weekend delivery costs £4.95 extra.

8gb soldered is cold I'm afraid (albeit soldering can make the RAM more effective and reduce power consumption thereby giving battery increase in life). 8gb is the new 4gb these days and with no room to expand you'll soon be looking or requiring more RAM imho. (edited)

For a majority of laptop users 8gb is more than enough for daily tasks.

how does this compare to the hp aero 13 ryzen 7 ?

The Aero has 16GB of RAM which is obviously much better, it also has a brighter display. This Yoga Slim is all aluminium though, while the Aero is a plastic affair. EDIT: I just looked it up again and apparently it's magnesium alloy, which feels plastic but also makes it very light. This is likely why some reviews were saying it felt cheap. It does have a plastic touchpad compared to the glass on the Yoga Slim, though.

The problem is I find this configuration half-baked...it's still 8GB soldered. A few weeks ago you could get it with 5600U/256GB and the same 8GB RAM for £343 - that's the sort of price where such a compromise makes sense. 5800U is nice but I don't see the point when you're still limited to 8GB. The decision to pair an 8 core CPU with 8GB RAM is absolutely bonkers

Just keep in mind with Ryzen processors, they take 2GB of the RAM for graphics. So its not 8GB useable, its actually 6GB. Really not enough these days. Manufacturers are being frustratingly stubborn with RAM.

My yoga 7 hinges broke and crack my screen after under 2 years of light use, beware and Google the issues before you buy

Did you open it from the middle or from the sides?

Please tell me a few common apps that require more than 8gb ram? And even stuff that goes above 8gb, the nvme is so fast you don’t really notice any paging. (edited)
    Fents's avatar
    Fents
Paging is still slower than RAM though. Not only is a good NVME equivalent to DDR2 RAM speeds but it has lots of added latency. When you have numerous applications open at the same time you will definitely notice the lack of RAM. I noticed a massive increase in responsiveness going from 8 to 16 with my laptop and I only use standard Microsoft applications and a browser on it for work.

I even noticed it changing from 16 to 32 in my desktop. (edited)

Ordered this 10mins ago, then came across this post and noticed about the ram, tried to cancel it and they said I can’t as it’s being processed so I’m gonna have to return it Vs being able to save all the hassle in the first place..

Like who solders just 8gb 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

My workload ain’t gonna be that heavy but no room for upgrading ram isn’t good enough

Who solders just 8GB? Apple does, all the time, then charges £1000 for it.

What's the point of buying a new Windows laptop with 8gb of ram exactly? Just buy 2nd hand or go for a Chromebook

I have this laptop except processor is 5600u, everything else is the same. have used it daily for 18 months
Build quality, speakers, keyboard and trackpad are great
It's plenty powerful and 8GB RAM doesn't bother me at all, can even play older/light games
It's so light, and I got used to the screen size. Very portable unlike my 15.6 inch brick of a gaming laptop
I don't like the screen. It's super glossy and looks too dark unless at 100% brightness all the time. But then battery only lasts 2-3 hours. I lowered it to 1080p and it lasts a little longer.
Mine has a faulty keyboard, happened right as the warranty ran out. Sometimes I'm completely unable to type as it doesn't input the keys I'm pressing. Seems to be a common problem.
No USB-A is annoying, had to buy a dongle

We are in the market for a work laptop for my wife. General word processing, VPN connection, odd download, maybe a little streaming but definitely no gaming. Is this suitable or more spec than I’d need !

My laptop opens up and immediately uses 16gb ram, that is minimum spec requirement. It's your windows operate system and any other software that runs all the time that will eat up the ram as they fill up the software with crap to deliberately slow it down to force you to upgrade more often as they are already powerful enough nothing new there.

I wouldn't touch this with a bargepole. They are trying to get rid of these models with smaller ram to ordinary folk who don't realise this won't last as long as it should (edited)

You can put Linux Mint or some other flavour on it and it will breeze through.
