My daughter is looking for a lightweight laptop with plenty of storage/ memory she is a writer but is also ill so needs it to be comfortable and easy to handle. Any suggestions please?

I'd have been very tempted by that as a Linux machine, but 4GB of soldered RAM is a bit of a bummer. Much rather have 8 these days

Earlier you could upgrade laptop CPUs . Those were the days . Now due to thin and light , you cannot upgrade as all soldered even ram . But intel blocked CPUs in firmware as well with Intel Management Engine.

Fair enough.

I hear, hehehehe. 13.3 inch screens, 12 inch screens, and ... :-) These are all Tablet territories man?, lol. :-D Don't people like things with 'MEAT' in them anymore? - 15 inch, 15.6 inch, 17 inch+?, hahahahahaha. ;-)

E-series was the low-cost option, yes, but I'd still take a Celeron or Atom over an AMD E-series, any day!

In fact I don’t know if I am so unlucky or what Bought two laptops off John Lewis clearance section, took them home the Lenovo 900 series screen was flickering like mad, clearly faulty they apologised, the dell 2 in 1 wouldn’t even switch on. Got it. Not impressed, pretty sure this one would be better in some respects.

I have this tablet and have had it for over a year. Whilst the battery life is great its a piece of garbage. Its sluggish beyond belief even when just trying to use netflix, amazon video or even VLC. It essentially just about manages to run apps, runs out of memory very quickly and then eventually gives up. The screen isnt great either. In short youll have tons of battery life because youll be so sick of trying ot use it youll just turn it off.

True, things like video watching / streaming, drawing, web browsing etc. will be fine. Though even light gaming is pretty much impossible and I wouldn't even bother trying. Biggest issue I can see right now is 4GB of RAM. It's just about enough for what I mentioned above, but in the future it will definitely be bogged down with background applications.

Yes I myself am not sold on the 2 in 1 form factor but I suppose it's ideal for a majority of use being light recreational use.

Eeeh, not too sure about this one, I suppose if you really want a 2-in-1 this would be good

Light gaming yes, the only game I've played on it is Star Trek Online and it will play it acceptably at 1080p with just above low settings, all those games are older so I would wager they will all play better, when it's working hard you can hear the fan working but at all other times it's silent.

It's roughly £50 for one stick retail but on trade I can get it around £20 brand new. Oh yeah it's definitely worth it but there's a mental limit on how much we want to spend. From the looks of it the bezel is smaller on the 530, it's probably thinner and lighter too. I don't expect there to be much else apart from the fingerprint reader and better battery management.

You are paying for a 2 in one device rather than standard laptop. You can fold the screen back and use it as a tablet. It has a touch screen and Android can be installed on it . I installed AndY which is free and has no nags/adverts. So although you can buy a laptop with the same spec for less you cannot buy a two in one device like this for less. Although I paid less for this because I took advantage of a double promotion, this is the lowest I have seen it since then.

For this spec, anything near the £500 mark would be a good deal.

Keter shed anyone? Same price as this LOL (excited)

Interesting tablet and keyboard, but weak CPU apparently struggles with tasks beyond browsing and video playback. Bright IPS at 400 nit but not very sharp apparently. Quite slim tablet too, shame about the CPU if only it was a little more mid range. Agree on all points, and want to add probably better to also get one with pen support in my son's case.. May be a factor for other parents to consider when buying thier children a PC for university

One of the most important things when buying a laptop for a Uni student is getting one that's reasonably thin and light. Otherwise, lugging around a hulking laptop along with textbooks all day will drive him/her nuts and they probably won't tell you about it so as not to cause offence! The other 2 things worth looking about for are: - good battery life (desks in libraries, lecture halls aren't necessarily adjacent to power sockets and you can't realistically leave a laptop unattended whilst charging). - a decent keyboard (for obvious reasons!) I'd give this Lenovo a big swerve if you're looking for a laptop for a student.

Thanks for the suggestion, though I'm looking for 15.6 screen ideally. I don't need it till new job in a month or so, I'm just keeping an eye out atm (prime day was annoyingly bad)

Hi, this any good? I think it's perfect for uni. Long battery life and quality IPS display with touch function. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Acer-Spin-5-13-3-Inch-Intel-i3-2GHz-4GB-128GB-Windows-Laptop-Black-/332562572122

Lets just agree to disagree. I have DDR3 in my main PC which I use for gaming still. Yes it is sufficient. However I bought my RAM 4-5 years ago. If I was buying a new laptop now for around £400 I would expect to get DDR4 RAM. An I3 with 4GB RAM and a 500GB normal hdd (not sshd) would be sufficient for what most people will use this laptop for. However the point still stands that it is around £400 and therefore one should expect budget-mid range specs but still the latest generation. 7think7 did not say the technology was useless, that was your own judgement. I agree with them that for this price you should expect DDR4 that is all. Don't be so quick to criticise perfectly valid comments.

You are full of rubbish and negativity. I recently bought the Yoga 920 after using I have the Yoga 700 for 3 years with a 6500u processor which is pretty much half the performance of the 8250u. The Yoga 700 is very very decent and battery life is still very good. There is a price premium on the touch screen and fold able mode. The tablet mode would be useful for presentations etc, don't use it much, but the touchscreen is a feature I don't want to live without anymore it's simply brilliant and takes so much strain away from your hands. It is a mid level premium laptop and doesn't suffer half of what you accuse it off.

I bought mine last blackfriday, I did not have any of the problems you are reporting. wifi drops if tou connect a all metal usb to the right port, but that is a common problem on ultrabooks. i had no issues with colour or hinges, but my panel is lg (LGD04BF) Thunderbolt works great connected to a HPomen accelerator

Not sure, I don't think so, but then I probably wouldn't notice. Have you thought about looking at one in Currys or John Lewis if you think yours isn't right.

Does the LG panel have a warm/yellow tint?

Sorry for the delay. I am now on my third laptop. Was happy with second but after a few days the screen backlight started flickering/flashing like crazy. Was definitely hardware rather than driver as it was doing it on the bios screen also. 2nd and 3rd both LG panels, no idea on the first one. Fingers crossed for this one as it's a nice bit of kit.

I have the tab & projector version a few years old now but still going strong. These are really good battery is pretty good. The only issue is they do not do software updates. We only just got Andriod 6 on them about a year ago and that was a pretty stock basiv version. So be prepared to be stuck on the last Andriod version.

Superb tablet, great battery life and recently updated to Android 7. Bought this last time around, it came boxed and was unmarked. Doesn't come with a case but they are cheap enough.

I have this tablet and it is a beast. Battery lasts forever, screen is great, superb sound, and really fast. Kickstand is a superb idea and just makes sense. I'd be tempted to get another if I could find a reason

Thanks OP and @carlblakemore and @45ure and @SFL I just bought it for my Mum, using Argos on ebay, with the 10% off code, so got it for £274 (incl shipping) She bought a similar model with about the same specs 2 years ago, so she'll sell the old one, probably for about the same price :)

I suspect it might be a different model ... As I have the Lenovo YOGA 510 too (but the AMD A9 chip version). Though yes it can slow a bit (I have habit at time's of having multiple things open at the same time, etc), but either way, I'd suspect it's be much zippier than the A6 version of the same?. And my one has a much more superior screen on it in every way (the "Full-HD version has IPS screen" you speak of, and not the TN). The touchscreen on mine is very responsive - though ironically, I don't always use the 'touch' feature as much as I blatantly should be (considering ... ) The hinges haven't gone pair shaped yet either (I've had mine for a few Month's shy of 1 Year now?). The battery life on it though, COULD be a bit better though mind ... Mine is the 1TB HDD version too, but I believe the one (same model, etc), that came with SSD, has a better battery life on it though. That's my humble analysis on it anyway ...

Could you link me to that review? Might be a different model, the Full-HD version has IPS screen. This has a TN.

It's been this price for quite long. Just bare in mind the touchscreen adds mechanics to the screen of course and the touch doesn't last very long. It'll break after the one year warranty within a few months after it expires. I work there and trust me, it has happened countless times.

If you have good RAM and the PC isn't bogged down by badly written apps, then it shouldn't make a difference. Obviously those are big Ifs, but I'm sure he was just trying to be "technically" correct.

Not my experience with 4gb before I upgraded to 8gb under win 10. Having many browser tabs open seems to work best when it can take free ram.

I think they're trying to say that Windows RAM optimisation means more free RAM is automatically a good sign. What's important is that when you need it, the RAM can be easily free'd up.

Guess it depends what you need it for then, all the browsers and apps I use work on anything over android 4.

I didn't say it can do more, I said it will become redundant sooner. Apps will no longer run etc... Don't get me wrong it'll be a very good tablet to use but for me personally the outlay at this price point should have a minimum on android 7. You've had 3 years out of yours which is great but it's approaching the end of its lifespan in terms of software compatability which for a new tablet purchase isn't worth it imo. You got yours at the right time & had your money's worth.

Lol I've been using my tab 2 for the past 3 years on lolipop, it's been used intensively daily as a tablet and sat nav, been to about 20 countries (including India) and still going strong. What can android 7 do that can make older models redundant?

Why isn't anyone trying to get tablets back on the market lazy!

Isn't this stuck on old android? The build & performance is supposedly good on these things but they get let down by the lack of OS upgrades. If this was on android 7 then you could argue you'd get a good couple of years out of it but anything lower will be redundant much quicker.

Depends on personal preference, Nebo from Windows Appstore(and for Android) for £3.50 is a good input method.

Yes, German model is German keys. I have a UK one, when the keyboard is not lit up, I can see the UK keys are pre-set. You can see change the Windows keyboard, but you will still see the pre-set UK keys. A workaround is to use its on screen virtual keyboard or an external keyboard.

I love the innovation but not the real world usability. That Atom chip is woefully underpowered and that keyboard is pretty much useless as a typing device. This device really needs to be around £200 to make it feasible, particularly with the availability of so many Windows laptops at that price. Even though its not a particularly good tablet OS, I'd say Android is probably more suited to this type of device than Windows

Love mine, keyboard does take some getting used to, it's not really for writing an essay, but for a quick email, browsing the net etc, it's great. Although I am on my second as the first one died suddenly after a few months.

German keyboard I assume?
