sorted byOf course it depends on how the disc was compiled and distributed etc. For an English-language film with sections of foreign dialogue, the subtitles for those sections can either be:
- A normal selectable subtitle track (often the second English option)
- A forced-narrative file, which is hidden and is automatically loaded in the absence of a subtitle track being selected
- Hardcoded subtitles burned on to the video
Really, all disc manufacturers should put all subtitles (full and foreign-dialogue-only) as actual selectable tracks and clearly list them as such in the menu, production information and back cover. And they should have a full and foreign-dialogue-only subtitle track for the film's native language wherever it's released in the world. So, for example, a Spanish film should have a full Spanish subtitle track and a foreign-dialogue-only track wherever the film is released.
And then obviously the manufacturers can "regionalise" the rest if they wish, like bundling regions & languages together for certain parts of the world.
See youtube video --about 1 minute 41 seconds in shows back of slipcase --- looks like Italian subtitles only.

Inglese translates to "English" which is what you should look out for when seeing if something supports English language.
Audio -English and Italian.
Subtitles- Italian only.
The one I have posted supports UK and Italian audio but has only Italian subtitles - I've edited the post to further reflect this.
