I wonder if someone can help me - is there a good guide to explain what everything is that I should be looking for with a new pair of walking boots?

I've had a pair of Lomer leather boots for nearly 20 years and they've lasted really well but they've started letting in water and rubbing a little so think it's time for an upgrade, but honestly I've no idea the difference between say these and the £14 Ozark pair posted the other day on Amazon (since removed from here).
On paper they look pretty similar but I'm obviously certain they aren't

E.g Should I still be looking for leather? Or are there better materials for boots now?
    Is goretex essential?
I'd like some ankle support but these say they flex which il seems counter to the style

All in all, I'm a bit confused where to start!!

It depends what you need them for really. Are you just walking? Hiking? Mountain climbing? There’s no perfect boot, as everyone’s feet are different. Especially with different brands & boots, they often are very different in terms of sizes (I size up in my Scarpas).

I’d highly recommend going into an outdoor shop & speaking with someone and trying a few different boots on (Cotswolds usually have knowledgeable staff from my experience). If you find some you like, always check online as you’ll more than likely find them cheaper somewhere else, and most places will price match & knock an extra 10% off.

I’d personally stick with a trusted brand like Scarpa, La Sportiva, Salewa, Lowa, Mammut, Salomon, Merrell. From my own experience when I first got into hiking, I just bought some £30 boots. They felt comfy & waterproof at first, but lasted about a month. Now after years into hiking & mountaineering my usual go to’s are Scarpa (I have the Ribelles & Manta which are on the more expensive side) but they are definitely up there with the best. So you know the saying ‘buy cheap, buy twice’.

Gore-Tex is always a bonus, although you’ll still get some boots that will let you down after a while, so usually recommended buying Nikwax to protect your boots & help with the waterproof longevity.

The sole is also very important if you’re going to be hiking & climbing anything serious, you’d ideally want a Vibram rubber sole as they’re probably the best in the business when it comes to grip.

At the end of the day it depends on your budget & needs and whether what’s worth it for you. Nothing wrong with some of the cheaper boots either, but I just wouldn’t rely on them or recommend if doing any serious hiking.

    Hope this helps a little

What a bluddy annoying website... a popup appears demanding you give them an email address and password before you can even look at the items. They can get lost.

It's been explained before why they only show prices for members, but for the initiated it's due to agreements with suppliers to offer their EOL products at a lower rate than other websites which the suppliers also sell via.

Have been well impressed by my Scarpa Mojito Urban's that I picked up in 2020. Very tempted by these but struggling to justify why

I have these and they are awesome! Great price, would consider a backup pair

Id probably have bought something here if it wasn't for their serious website demanding you log in just to browse.

They've already had a data breach a few years back. Now they want your details before letting you even see the stock!

    No chance!

There seems to be dozens of discount codes for this website, but I couldn't get any of them to work
    MildmanneredCalvin's avatar
There aren't any. Some get released for a short period of time, but they work only on specific stock that they are trying to shift, not anything you fancy. Unless you know of a private website which shares codes, whatever you find on Google will mainly be a waste of time. (edited)

    Discount is a bit stingy

Any tips on sizing? I’m a UK 10 in Nike trainers for instance so should I go for 44.5 in these (I’ve heard they are pretty true to size), or traditionally I’d go up half a size for thicker walking socks - any advice appreciated

you really need to try the shoe in a store for the fit and feel. Its a lot to invest for something so important. I tried every pair in a mountaineering store before finding the one pair perfect for me.

Very tempted by these but heard mutterings of poor workmanship/materials/longevity of late. Can anyone confirm or deny please? Its a lot to spend on boots which potentially may only last a few months! Thanks in advance

You heard mutterings..what's else is there to say..

Personally, I would strongly recommend trying one in store (ellis brigham, cotswold maybe). Different boots were made with different lasts. For a hiking shoe might be fine since flexible, but not hiking boots on my experience.

Would these be better for the extra 15 pounds.

Walking would be mostly on Dartmoor. I struggle to get more that 2.5 years out of boots.

I have these ,use them for hill walking Donalds,Corbets that sort of thing ,they're the most comfortable pair of boots I've ever owned.
