So I’ve been waiting for BOTW to have an offer on (optimistic I know) for a while. For those that have played both - is it worth playing BOTW first or just skip it and go for this? I’ve not played any Zelda games since about the GameCube days

It's hard to say because I hated Breath Of The Wild and enjoy Tears Of The Kingdom.

Tears Of The Kingdom just seems to get more right, allows you to do more in your own way and the map is absolutely huge.

Zelda is my favourite series of all time and I've barely cared about the story, I couldn't tell you what happens in nearly every game. Some people might say you have to play Breath Of The Wild for the story, I would just skip it and go straight to Tears Of The Kingdom. (edited)

Fantastic game. I usually don't have time for open world games because they feel overwhelming but this just hits differently, even if there's no clear direction.

Without map markers, there's no pressure to 'complete' everything and discovering everything feels more organic. You'll set out to do A and end up doing B-Z instead. 40 hours in and I've only done 20% of the story.

Absolutely, I think that's the charm of it, you can just wander about and chill or, have a fight, solve a few puzzles, or follow the story line.

Bought this and animal crossing and a lite console for my daughter, never owned one before, read that you need an online sub to play with friends online is that right? Is there a good deal for online and is the plus worth it? Thanks
    RebTheRebel's avatar
CDKeys usually have a years subscription for around £12 which lets you play online and play the old Nes/SNES and Gameboy games. You can get the next sub up but if it's for your daughter I'm guessing she's young and I think the extra games on there might be lost on her, they're for us old folks looking at nostalgia and she probably won't ever use them, so I recommend just the normal sub, it's more than good enough.

Wow, what a game. Just can't put it down at the moment, pure fun. Loved BoTW but this really hooked me in more than BoTW initially did.

finished the first divine beast on BoTW and didn't carry on, but still bought this to see how I get on...peace of mind knowing it's Zelda, if I get bored of this i'll probably lose a fiver tops

i couldnt get into Botw not sure if i should try this

Yeah I was the same. Only started playing BOTW again a couple weeks a go, it's been sat on the shelf years because I couldn't get into it. After several hours it has "clicked" though and I'm enjoying it. I have to say though as someone who has played majority of Zelda games I do feel it has a little bit of an inflated praising. It's good, but the world feels empty compared to worlds like The Witcher 3 and EldenRing, so it does become repetitive just doing shrine after shrine just to level up your character. What BOTW missed was what made those other games feel more alive, and from what I've heard TOTK ticks all those boxes this time. The world feels more alive and has more interactions and dungeons (God how they are missed in BOTW) so maybe you'll enjoy this one, but I understand where you're coming from.

Fantastic game but if you didn't like BOTW you probably won't like this.
    Smoose89's avatar
Yes think i just figured that out. Played botw years ago so wanted to give it a go playing this. I just don't get the love for it. (edited)

Hmm I couldn't get in to botw but I didn't really give it a proper chance... I just don't like the weapon degrade system... very tedious
    irfan.anwar's avatar
If you had weapons that did not break, the game would be too easy and not challenging, just a hack and slash. The fact the world provides you with endless amount of weapons and materials, you are bound to find the same weapon again and again. In ToTK, it takes it up a notch but fusing a weapon with another weapon or a material to increase the attack/durability, you have a lot to choose from and play around with. Say you come across an armoured enemy and a standard sword won't do any damage, you can fuse a rock/bould to that sword to do damage, just one of many ways of to crafting weapons.

im a massive zelda fan, Link to the past being the best. and i did like BOTW, the breaking weapon thing is annoying but what makes it more annoying is the fact something breaks after a few hits.. anyways, i played this through in a day or 3 and its literally just the same as BOTW, down to the spirits that follow you after completing temples.. glorified DLC. Shame it took soo long.
    ohmygod2006's avatar
You play this through in a day or 3? Which is it? Could it be 2? How many hours per day did you put into this?

Incredible game. I've been playing for about 20h and feel like I've barely scratched the surface! Buy it and don't think twice - worth every penny.
    enclavemarine's avatar
Even at 3 x that you're barely making a dent in it. I've been playing it all day every day since last Tuesday and don't feel like I'm getting anywhere

I've already died 1000x times in BOTW and I'm still nowhere in the game. It's a bit frustrating for me to play with it. I don't really understand why is it fun to do the same few minutes again and again and again. It is just way too hard to enjoy it in my opinion. I wanted to try this one, so I tried BOTW again, but I've got the same feeling again. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, I don't know...
    razortth's avatar
I totally feel the same way about BOTW. I just couldn't get into it.

Better in every respect to BOTW, even better playing the PC demo at 8k
  21. JohntyHerringtonIII's avatar
I never finished BotW but still tempted to pick this up after seeing all the contraptions that people have been making.
  22. mooooof's avatar
Great game, been playing everyday since launch. Long old slog to find shrines though
  23. bonzobanana's avatar
An amazing gameworld to explore but less than ideal gameplay mechanics in my opinion. However the gameplay mechanics do look more interesting here I have to admit than Breath of the Wild.

Just a shame its running on such weak hardware hence people are already playing this emulated with far better resolution and improved frame rates.
    stuartc74's avatar
People playing it via emulation are doing so so that they don't have to buy a Switch or any games. No PC gamer is buying a copy, even though they don't own a Switch, so that they can legally play it emulated. Not a single person on Earth will have done that. (edited)
