Anyone else think Sultans of Swing goes from a good song on Dire Straits to one of the best songs ever on Alchemy Live? Sheer genius.

Yep. Best live performance of any song, ever.

At one time, if you were an early adopter of CDs you had two choices: Herbert von Karajan or Dire Straits ....

The first CD I bought was Love Over Gold. I didn't even own a CD player at the time (they were way too expensive!).

Surely Dire Straits not prog rock?

Thanks for posting Andy. I was about to pull the trigger then realised I already own the best four of these.

They don't appear to be remastered either (you can see I'm looking for an excuse to buy!).

You and your friend can skateaway hand in hand down to the waterline where you can perform your latest trick. No heavy fuel required because it really isn't so far away. When it comes to you two young lovers. Why worry about the news of others telling you it is only expresso love? Escape from the industrial disease along the Portobello Road and down across from the Telegraph road where it never rains. You know what to say if anyone asks "Where do you think you're going?", Romeo & Juiliet. (edited)

I listened to the Alchemy versions long before I heard the originals - infinitely better. It. a real shame that Alchemy isn't included as they are a pinnacle of music

I bloody love Dire Straits so heat for that alone. I have all the previous remastered albums and as the CDs are identical to this set there is no need for me to get it (although I’m still tempted). It’s a shame this set doesn’t include anything new or the Alchemy, BBC or On the night live albums.

"Deluxe packaging" is taking it a bit far. Very flimsy box and inserts are not particularly great. Good price if you're not bothered about anything apart from the music though. Heat added.

Brothers In Arms was the first CD I ever bought, but after buying the rest of their back catalogue, over time I actually preferred their first 2 albums, which I now play a lot more than BIA. Second CD I ever bought was Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music's "Street Life: 20 Great Hits", which I still fire up my MP3 rip of to this day!

Well think of it this way. Either we don't understand Gravity or only 4.9% of the Universe is visible to us, the rest is Dark Matter and Dark Energy. So we know nothing. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. The radiosphere extends from this planet about 160 miles across, so 80 light years in every direction. This is the transmissions of the human race since the 20th Century. The transmissions have gone nowhere in terms of reaching any significant stars, the visible Universe is about 90 million lightyears across and possibly 25x bigger than that. It's likely that the human race will die out millions of years before our transmissions reach other civilisations if they exist, and the chances appear good in that respect. The Universe is so unimaginably massive and incomprehensible in size.

Of course this could be a simulation, there's no way yet to prove or disprove that. No human is likely to discover the reason they exist and the mysteries of the Universe will remain so to us. This is an incredibly special existence. If we really can only see 4.9% of what exists in the Universe and the rest is unknown to us, there's a reasonable chance that anything is possible. When anything is possible there's always hope.

I'm not sure if Dire Straits covered any of this in their lyrics, probably with good reason (edited)

I totally agree these sound amazing on vinyl. Funnily enough I never really liked Dire Straits when I was younger (they seemed too middle of the road) but bought a selection of their LPs last year off eBay and they are some of the best recordings I have heard.
