I know what they are but I still don't get them - and don't say you don't know what they are if you don't get them! Omega, Rolex, Zenith, IWC - why choose this over any of those. Then again, I suppose there are people who would spend a fortune on a Nissan Skyline GTR whereas I would sooner a Porsche! Each to their own I guess...not voted either way.

Neither have I because I haven't got a clue. But if I had £5k & wanted to buy a watch a Seiko wouldn't even come into my mind let alone get onto a possible list.

People giving their ill informed opinion when they obviously know absolutely nothing about Grand Seiko. They make brilliant watches, on par and even better than Rolex in some respects.

Grand Seiko for me, but the snowflake. Heat anyway for a lovely watch.

.In terms of cars a better analogy would be a BMW 5 series & a BMW M5

Not at all. As an M5 is a heavily modded 5 series. Same underpinnings, chassis etc.

A Grand Seiko has literally nothing in common with a Seiko, aside from the same parent company. The LFA example was a better one, in car terms

"You buy a Rolex to impress others. You buy a Grand Seiko to impress yourself."

Those that say they are better than Rolex in some respects are underplaying it. Grand Seiko is better than Rolex in EVERY respect, except brand recognition. It's not even close - in quality terms, it's like comparing a Bugatti (GS) to an Audi (Rolex). I say this as an owner of both brands - the GS gets alot more time on the wrist precisely because it flies under the radar of your average joe.

Now find me a deal on the SBGJ237! I am waiting to order one (edited)

Why. Why do I read comments on a Grand Seiko post *knowing* the comments will irrationally annoy me? Skoda and Porche are the same group, Seiko and Grand Seiko are in the same "group" of watchmakers. Different design, different materials, different specifications, different capabilities, different process, different looks, different craftsmen.

The thing with a GS is you buy it to worship the quality and finish, you buy a rolex to be worshiped by others.

The brand name carries connotations that would put even die hard Lambo fans off. The same as the brand name Seiko on a Grand Seiko puts me (and plenty of others) off buying one.

Which is why Skoda proudly carry their name and hide any VW connections under the bonnet - they don't want their brand tarnished

Not the model I would choose, but a GS Spring Drive is the only watch I would buy.

I was due to travel to Japan again last year and my intention was to buy one there. You can literally see all of them on view. The finish on them is quite stunning.

Only the Japanese could come up with this concept and deliver it perfectly

I don’t think it’s fair comparing a GS to a Nissan. It’s superior in just about every way to most watches. I wouldn’t buy one for the money but appreciate the workmanship and design.

However, unlike Seiko, Porsche don't stick the 'Skoda' badge on their cars. I wonder how many Porsche buyers would be happy if they ended up buying a 'Porsche Skoda'??? How many customers would they lose? Perception and reputation counts for much. They may be fabulous and incredible to look at, yet it's still a Seiko and says so on the dial. The connotations speak for themselves. They have a bad reputation for QC issues and that brand name...Seiko...carries those issues with it, along with the perceived price point for all but watch enthusiasts.

If you buy your watches because of the name on the badge, rather than for the engineering excellent and the superb quality of finish, then you're right, a Grand Seiko is not for you.

I think most watch enthusiasts would disagree with you here as your decision would only be guided by brand snobbery and not the quality of the underlying product. Also Seiko has a very high reputation in the watch community. Their history, quality and innovation are almost unparalleled. Almost every serious collector of watches will have one or two, particularly the vintage pieces.

Wanted an Oyster Perpetual 39 and was on a couple of waiting lists, then they discontinued them. Seeing as you can't buy a Rolex you actually want my next purchase is a Grand Seiko when the shops open up again.

I just can't be bothered with the bother of purchasing a Rolex any more.

Actually nothing at all like Rolex. But better and also worse in different aspects.

Better finishing (both externally and movement) and better dial work.

Worse bracelets and generally thick cases, so less comfortable.

Watch enthusiasts appreciate that a Seiko and a Grand Seiko watch are from the same stable, albeit they are worlds apart. Much in the same way that car enthusiasts know that a Skoda and Lamborghini are from the same stable, but markedly different beasts (edited)

    Any good as an investment?

Rolex is always your best bet for investment, especially if you can get one new at retail price, but it'd be easier getting blood out of a stone. Certain Grand Seiko models can be decent investments, mainly the rare limited editions with very sought after dials. I'd never usually advise buying a watch to invest though, 9 times out of 10 you're likely to lose money. (edited)
