There are some really good comparisons on YouTube that compare the extended editions on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K

It might not sure of the exact seen you mean, but it shows the differences between the versions. The 4K is obviously crisper but the colours don’t look as authentic to me in terms of the style of the films (hard to explain but they should be softer, like paint)

Hmm…Extended vs theatrical at £12.99. I wouldn’t mind seeing the extended once but can’t see myself sitting though repeat viewings. Kind of with they’d do a version where the theatricals were included as an extra.

That's the same link I used.

Both work fine on a Windows browser, but on iPhone both take me to Apple Music, then says "Item not available".

I'm sure it's an HDUK issue, because if I copy and paste the iTunes link directly into my iPhone Safari browser, it correctly takes me to the title in the iTunes app. (edited)

I have a PS5, but never actually tried the app, as I have an Apple TV. I know the console doesn’t support DV gaming, but not sure about apps or the 4K disc player.

Even if the PS5 did support DV, I would keep your ATV. By all accounts the PS5 is a poor media player, with high power consumption, no framerate matching and poor dynamic range matching.

I've never tested any streaming apps on my PS5, but I don't really intend to, as the ATV does everything so well.

My broadband is fast but I'm just wondering about the difference in …My broadband is fast but I'm just wondering about the difference in bitrate and now much it affects the visual quality when streaming in comparison to the discs.

I AM NOT AN EXPERT AND MIGHT BE TALKING RUBBISH. Having said that, in my experience - You're going to get different answers from different people, it's a fairly subjective thing as far as experience goes. 4K streaming usually tops out at about 25Mbps for Apple I believe, whereas the disks usually sit between 50-100.

How much that affects you personally will vary from person to person, but personally I notice artifacts in low light scenes when streaming. Personally my general rule is to get the disk for films I really care about, but streaming is definitely good enough that it still looks amazing in 4K. Price is usually a factor too. £50 for the disks here or £15 for streaming....the qualtiy isn't that much better to justify the difference IMO, but I'm not a huge LOTR fan.
  24. jak22's avatar
Although the bit-rate on disc is at least twice that of even the best streaming - like Itunes movies - it doesnt mean the PQ is twice as good. At sofa distance on a normal sized TV the differences in PQ do not justify the cost difference when building a 4K collection except for maybe a handful of favourite films

Alos in this case the PQ for these remasters was a little disappointing so I'd go digital - and Itunes have extras on an ATV 4K box

But the lossless audio on disc is noticeably better than streaming if you have a surround system (the DD+ bit-rate is closer to DVD level and is certainly not "transparent") but again its not worth the extra money

Further complication is that only the extended editions come with the iTunes Extras content, which is quite hefty for these movies.

The review is a year old, so I don’t know if matters have improved.https://www.flatpanelshd.com/review.php?subaction=showfull&id=1606978946The other issue is that it also upconverts everything to Atmos, unless you take the step to manually switch it off.Consoles have always been a compromise as far as being media players goes.

Not surprised to hear that tbh. Yeah as you say, consoles aren't really designed to be the best media players, the apps are just extras to beef up the value proposition. Thanks for explaining.

Bought the 6 film set for 29.99 on iTunes. Wanted to et on Google but I too haven’t been impressed with YouTube playing 4k.

I’m happy to see the appendices are included. I’m assuming these haven’t had 4k treatment but do seem to be HD.

My Lg nano cell plays these in 4k Dolby vision.

Harry Potter on my YouTube app in 4k was stuttering like mad. I had to play that via chrome cast ultra. Also the HP box set didn’t seem worth the upgrade at all so I had that refunded.

I’m very happy with my LOTR purchase. (edited)
