Good price If you want it for presentation. If not, go for a filleted Salmon side @ £10 per kilo (don't have this one done in store as they usually miss some bones).

Great deal and price. Could anyone advise if this product has the scales …Great deal and price. Could anyone advise if this product has the scales removed? I recently undertook processing of a gutted salmon myself and the scales were easily the most troublesome part as they go everywhere!

i bought this before from morrisons and you have to remove the scale yourself. mine came with the head still intact.

it was very difficult to cut the fish up as the spine was very tough and even with our biggest kitchen knife it was a struggle.

my husband refused to eat it as he says it had not been deboned so i ended up having to eat it myself. it took me a couple of weeks to manage this, and since that time, i have avoided salmon

but this is an extraordinary price as the salmon we got was absolutely huge.

I was thinking of getting 2 whole ones and suddenly saw the fishmonger in Morrison chopping some into segments. In the end, I got 2 trays. When asked if he can fillet it for me, he didn't answer and tried to disappear into the back. I wish I were white! Don't think I would be ignored if I were. I also watched some videos and did gravlax last year. Delicious, but now that they are in segments, a bit tricky. I have to admit that unless they fillet it for you, it's very messy business with scales flying all over the kitchen and the stench lingers on! But hey, it's nice to do it once or twice in a year! Especially after I have missed the elusive £5 duck! Quack!

You can learn how to fillet a whole salmon in 5 mins on YouTube and pin-bone it using some tweezers. You don’t actually need to cut through the spine unless you’re doing fillets with a bone in (which I prefer anyway) but you can use poultry shears for that. For removal of scales you can do it underwater which means less flying scales. Buying sides or whole is much cheaper than buying individual fillets so that’s what I do and I make a nice soup and stock out of the head and trimmings so nothing goes to waste.

Salmon is pretty boring these days but it's well worth making your own gravadlax as it's so easy, tastes much better than any shop bought stuff and is much cheaper.

    bbcgoodfood.com/rec…lax

    A few tips:

You can't use too much dill as my Swedish mother in law reminds me
    Turn always every 12 hours
Use less salt for a sweeter cure
Curing more than 48hrs gives a saltier cure
Don't press it down too heavily ; a couple of bean tins is fine.
Don't omit the gin or use vodka instead. It really enhances the flavour and is also another step to ensure a good cure.
If you want the edges tinged purple grate some raw beetroot in the mix.
It freezes well but otherwise lasts about a week in the fridge.

I don't bother making the mustard sauce because if you are near an IKEA the mustard sauce they sell is more than adequate.

Lovely on Christmas Eve with other seafood dishes as a light meal before the heaviness of the following day.

I just used a YouTube video and manage to cut both sides with most bones straight out as you split it in half. There's a few bones left but you can feel them with your hand and pull them out. It does take a bit of time but I'm not a professional or anywhere near and do end up with good fillets (probably about 16 from this whole).

Respect to anyone that can fillet a salmon. I used a regular but very sharp carving knife and the end result looked like it had been mauled by a grizzly bear. I left one pin bone in and it got stuck in my sons throat - didn't just put him off salmon it put him off fish. Ideally you would have the proper knife for filleting fish, pin bone tweezers, a pair of disposable gloves for your hands and mild bleach solution or vinegar spray for surfaces, because that smell does not go away quickly. A skilled filleter will yield about 60% from a whole salmon, assuming you won’t use the head and bones this effectively makes it £8.32 per kg which is still a very good price (edited)

I think we are making exactly the same point. If there was a local fishmonger (and there isn't one) I would go there. I stopped at an Asda at 10pm on the long way home from work to get some sundries and there in the reduced section was a a meter long whole salmon for £4 and a few pence. The original point was that filleting one of these things is a craft and only a proper fishmonger can make a proper job of it. Unless you have some serious skills it is not going to look like the Tokyo branch of Sushi Subway in the picture... (edited)

I just don't have a Morrisons nearby. Last year Tesco did not fillet because of COVID they didn't want any queues. Imagine it will be the same this year if they do it again. Before they did de-scale and fillet although it depends who get because sometimes it wasn't great.

The cashier told they only accept physical blue light when I present the virtual one from app. Eventually she added the discount when I showed my license and the card for name verification.

Not sure if it's true what she said as there is no mention of only physical card in T & C , but do remember to take the physical card just in case.

No i buy it whole for father in law and he descales it himself. And portions it.
I purchased some already cut up and realised when I got home that they weren't descaled.

Why do you need to fillet and waste fish? cook it and take out bones on plate just like you do with chicken etc. Put the head into a fish curry and the sauce will be heavenly

This year Morrisons are selling it whole, filleted pre packed and sliced pre packed for the same price. You can pick a whole salmon from the fish counter and have it prepared any way you like. I normally fillet it myself so I was SO happy to see they've provided other options. 46454387-X6lNQ.jpg

At the Morrisons Leeds - Merion Centre, you can get it de-scaled and get, on request!! But descaling has to be done on whole fish. If it was already cut or filleted then you can't do anything.

I usually select a fish, then specifically ask to get it de-scaled and cut in to fillets.
I think the staff does it on request. (edited)
