We refill our Sodastream CO₂ ourselves using an adapter and a large donor CO₂ cylinder, you can buy the adapter here. The donor cylinder start about £26 for 3.15kg, vs. the 410g you get in a Sodastream bottle, so ~7 refills, or ~£3.75 each re-fill. I've actually got a 15kg cylinder now, and that cost £63, plus cylinder deposit (fully refundable) as I refill bottles for the family now. So that's 37 refills for about 85p each.

For the Pepsi Max you are looking at between 1.5-5p per litre of carbonated water, plus your syrup, so for this deal 44.3p per litre, or less than £1 per 2L bottle equivalent. Always available, never left to go flat, and doesn't take up loads of fridge space (well mine doesn't as I get the water from the cold water dispenser)

If anyone is asking why bother buying Soadstream vs the shop bought bottles, how about the utter devastation that is the waste of plastic every bottle you buy, 9L in a tiny bottle is much better than 9L from 5 huge bottles.

I've had my sodastream for a couple of years mainly just for sparkling water. No problems at all. Got the Pepsi and 7up the other day and didn't really like the 7up but thought the Pepsi was pretty good.

They don't get water carbonated enough, so you get a rather flat soft drink, although it tastes okay. If you go for a high carbonation of water each time, which these syrups really need, your gas won't last a week. If you like a bit of lightly sparkling water, you'll be okay, but if you want anything more, you're still far better off with plastic, sadly. I get through about 4 litres of carbonated water a day (I have a disability which actually means I rely on it to stay alive). I've bought various sodastreams now and again since the 90's to see if it would cut any costs, and each time been reminded why they're not good enough. The last one I tried was the electric automatic version, so it's not about me not using it correctly. The gas just doesn't last and the water does not get a fizzy as store bought.

You have to drink carbonated water to stay alive? What?

I've had a Sodastream for years and had no issues. Great machines.

100% yes and you would get the same or better result. 2 litres fizzy water costs 17p from the supermarket if you can find stock. Tesco and Asda, at least for now, have stopped stocking them.

I have a Drinkmate that are better than sodastream because they have a patented pressure valve that allows you to carbonate any liquid. I have it connected up to the 15kg co2 bottle with a connector hose so I don't need the sodastream bottle.

These are good. Normal price is approx ~£5 and they seem to have a long shelf life, so might be worth stocking up
  6. martinmarv's avatar
OK - just gone to check, and the Pepsi and 7-up bottles I bought just before Christmas last until mid to end of September 2022, so approx 10 months (although obviously it depends on the retailer and how long they've had them!). So I guess it depends how quickly you'll drink 54 litres of Pepsi Max

No. I meant Sodastreams themselves. Otherwise I'd have used the correct punctuation. And as Sodastream is now owned by Pepsico, these are their own brand of syrups. The syrups are great, at this price especially...

I like the Pepsi Max, honestly I can't really taste a difference between the Sodastream stuff and the pre-bottled Pepsi Max from shops. When I reached the end of the Sodastream bottle of Pepsi Max I could somewhat taste the sparkling water more. I think that may be a result of me not shaking the bottle properly after pouring the Pepsi Max syrup in

What is the 7UP like? Did you try 7UP regular or 7UP Free? I'm interested in trying it

The 7up is identical (although I don't like it), these syrups will be the same stuff they put in drinks machines in McDonalds etc.

I've not long ago bought a Pepsi max post mix syrup (7 litres) and find it is slightly less thick/concentrated, but on S&S at amazon it is £28, and is the equivalent of ~5 of these so not great value, but wanted to try it over the festive period I don't think I'll bother again unless I can get it for~£25 or less now. The taste between the two options is exactly the same once you've got the ratio correct.

Good price. I just got my SodaStream nearly 2 weeks ago and love it. Pepsi max tastes great and the 7up free is nice (albeit a bit sweet).

I did struggle with the machine at first as seemed my gas had run out after only a few days. Turns out you can weigh the bottle to see if it still has gas. The bottle weighs about 760g and the gas is about 425g. I weighed mine and was over 1000g so still had gas. I suspect it wasn’t quite screwed in right at the back so wasn’t fully releasing gas. Maybe worth checking for anyone with issues.

To be honest only works out about 12p saving per bottle compared to buying individually at £3.99 but still a saving.Do you happen to know how long 6 bottles would typically last when stored correctly?Thank you

Years past any dates on the bottles. I used to have a Sodastream as a kid so bought one a good 7+ years ago. Used to buy the Rootbeer Sodastream syrup from Argos & stocked up 12 bottles when they were selling at £2.50 a bottle. Cheaper than A&W at £1 a can. Can't find any anywhere anymore so presume they've stopped making it now.
Anyway, bought those a good 6+ years ago & only just gone through the last bottle. Seems to get thicker over time, even when sealed, so needs sterilised water to thin back down but otherwise no signs of going out of date, no illness, no visual mould etc. Keep in the fridge once opened & use within weeks/ months. Think the Rootbeer was sugar based so with such a high percentage of sugar, could be why it lasted. Can't promise the same with non-sugar though.
Bought Dr Pete & the lemon & lime stuff on a silly low priced offer too with similar results. Don't see the point of buying Pepsi Max though as it's widely available for cheaper pre-mixed when on offer. Stocked up on 16 x 1.5l bottles @ 75p each (regular & Cherry) from Iceland recently so should last. Only issue is space to store pre-mixed.

Yes, you get ~400g back in, as the donor cylinder in obviously very high pressure, and I have a good quality dual stage regulator for doing the refills. The initial setup cost is high to be honest, but I'll easily save as much (and make some back) in the longer term and I am not wasting copious amounts of plastic.

Sorry no where near Milton Keynes, but have a ring around some local breweries/refill shops etc. you should find one that can do it for you, even if you need to buy the Sodastream adaptor your self.

The economics of it on paper were fine, but it never ended up seeming to be the reality. And it was more effort than bottles. I do feel bad about the plastic, we take it to be recycled but we have no way of knowing it's not just being shipped off somewhere else to become someone else's problem.

I find it only works when doing it at some sort of scale, or over many years, I am lucky enough to be able to re-fill bottles for a few people I know locally as well as my family. I only charge £2.50 (to none family) for a refill vs. £10-13 for Sodastream and most people I do 2 bottles at a time so they always have one on hand. I know quite a few people in my local community who use our local refill shop (food, shampoo etc.), and since they didn't offer it I gave them my details so they could point people my way, as they do recommend these systems to save on waste.

I got the Sodastream Spirit machine:

    46811486-hTAAP.jpg
It is £49 in Currys. I would say it's worth it (I've had it for a few days) - just be warned if you don't press hard enough the water doesn't carbonate. You need to press the button down fully for it to work and watch for the bubbles

Also, if you don't put the bottle in properly the water will leak when you press the button. You'll know it's in properly if there's a small gap at the bottom. Some say you should feel / hear a click, I personally haven't had this happen

Trust me, I wouldn't. I didn't fizz the water properly on my first use and didn't know it. This stuff isn't great without the fizz, the beauty of Sodastream is you can make the drink to suit your taste though so maybe you could do a light fizz if that's something you're okay with? (edited)

    You're very welcome.

Dr Pete doesn't taste like Dr Pepper but it does have that perfume / floral kind of after taste but in a different way. You might love or hate it if you like Dr Pepper (I'm a big fan), as long as you know in advance its not trying to identically copy. Same as with brand & store colas - similar but different & personal taste.

I've tried quite a few in the range but can't say I've tried the 7up or orange Tango yet, but thanks for the feedback.

Don't know if they do the apple Tango but our kids would go crazy for it if that was the same as pre-mixed.

Hope you enjoy whichever you try though. Worth trying as many as you can afford, then at least you know to repeat purchase or avoid.
