Be aware these have the USB port directly soldered to the drive, so these cant be shucked and used as internal drives.

    Damn!

Why would someone buy a recertified HDD? I would just buy new to safeguard my data. That’s like setting yourself up to loose all your data. And the fact it is WD is not encouraging. (edited)
    tintowellfan's avatar
Your new drive could be my next recertified drive. I have several of these, and yet to have a problem.
  3. agent_pires's avatar
The case etc all look new? or are these have cosmetic damage but have been cleaned up?
    Mr_Chondo's avatar
The cases and cable will be brand new, just no retail box (will come in brown cardboard box). When WD refurbish HDD's they rehouse them in new cases.

You can play PS4 games off of this, but not PS5 games

You can store but not play PS5 games off of this drive - to play PS5 games you can copy from this drive to your console storage. The main reason you may want to do this is it frees up space from your console main storage without having to delete games if you want to play them later

Why is there such negativity surrounding recertified drives I've had 2 connected to my ps4 for well over 2 years and not a single hic up. 1 connected to my series s and all good and now one connected to my ps5 all good
    cochon's avatar
I think people conflate recertified with repaired, and assume the drives were at one time faulty.

A internal drive unit that's previously exhibited a genuine fault is not economically repairable, even for the manufacturer. The USB board or case might be worth replacing and reselling, but usually these are customer returns that exhibit no real problems or odd stock clearances.

I've had 6 WD recerts over the years, both 2.5" & 3.5", all are still going, all had zero hours on the SMART counters.

Nice one, just ordered the newer 2TB model, lighter & less bulky version (only 13.8mm thick) with 10% off = £31.49 & they're rarely in-stock!
    merb0786's avatar
    Author
The sizes are a red herring, WD store do not offer a "bulkier" version and it's just a listing error. All models are 13.8mm, including the ones posted on this deal. (edited)
  7. Kammykay's avatar
Was thinking of getting one for series S, been told I can't play directly off but can store and then transfer games between. Is this correct?
    Brabus_Duddy's avatar
You can store any Xbox game on it. You can play games off it too but you can’t play the Series S/X enhances games from it.

It’s daft but it’s prob to do with the speed architecture they use. The MS expansion card is such a rip off

What's the difference between passport and element versions anyone knows?
    cochon's avatar
The elements is the basic no frills no software variant. The passport versions have on board encryption capability, and come with some fancy backup software. The passport can be used without the encryption, but with, makes for a secure way of transporting data if you carry it around and don't want thieves/pickpockets trawling through your stuff.

Thanks for this ordered a 4tb, don't really need it but at this price I couldn't resist. I got the 2tb in June for £31.50 and haven't had any problems with it the model number according to CrystalDisk Info is wd20sdrw-11vuus0 and a quick google found it on ebay from international sellers for well over a hundred pounds ?. According to CrystalDiskInfo the drive had no use and appeared to be new.

Well I don't know why everyone goes on about the recertified ones like the plague, got mine this morning, it's sealed, they sent me the mac version, just needs formatting..

Did you order the 3TB version pictured or was that a bump from the 2TB?

The 3TB option didn't seem to be discounted to me and appeared to be more expensive than the 4TB version in this offer.
  11. DaddyPig's avatar
You can use code 5OFF1UK on the 4tb drive so it's £44.99 aswell .

I think price has gone up the 2TB show £34.99 and the 1 & 3 TB also very high. 3TB shows £94.99.

The 4TB Ultra is worth it for £55. Just purchased. Plus, i used Quidco for an extra 3.75% and got a hold of 15% student. Works out to £44.69. Pay a little extra you basically future proof the HDD (if it lasts lol) with USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 10gbp (they give an adapter for USB A) and added premium of features and metal case. Overall better investment in my opinion for a little bit more.

Managed to get the 15% through my sister,, ask if she would register and send the code. Took her few minutes and before I could signup she already sent me the code. Paid just over £26. Thanks so much op

I spoke to customer service about the difference in size of drives. Both drives are identical internally. But cases differ for 1=portable 13.5
    2 = stackable 21.5
    Hope this helps.....

  21. luckylemon's avatar
Can this be installed as internal drive?
    JoeBloggs112's avatar
No it's a closed sealed unit
  22. Perfectionist's avatar
They do a "Gaming Storage" version which is much cheaper than standard - apart from the preloaded software, is there any other difference?

    westerndigital.com/en-…hdd

They are brand new and priced:
    2TB = £46.99
    4TB = £68.99

If worried about "recertified" quality - would paying a little extra for these be worth it?
  23. agent_pires's avatar
Guys think it's more spending a few quid more and getting the Passport Ultra? Can use a standard usb-c cable with the ultra and I think a few other features from what I understand
    Ollie222's avatar
I didn't even know they did a USB C version, had I done so I'd have ordered a 4TB one of those instead.
  24. heylive4a2000's avatar
I've just bought the red 4tb drive I now have every colour of this drive in 4tb........most of mine are recerts but only had 2 fail on me......I have them all in raid 1 setups so if one drive fails I don't lose data......heat as there's loads of options maybe WD saved up a job lot. And the 2tb can be slim or the full size
  25. agent_pires's avatar
Cheers decided to get the 4TB Ultra in the end. Used topcashback for an extra 8% apparently it's good enough to edit 1080p 60fps footage from so should be good for all my work video projects.

UPDATE FOR THOSE STILL WAITING. Hello friends, I ordered on 22nd and didn’t get any update on my WD account kept saying processing. Emailed and phoned couple of different numbers with no luck. Anyway finally today managed to speak to someone who advised me UPS dumped all local post in a Collection centre conveniently. Now I’ve been told to go and collect it from the local store where it has been sitting for last five days. My advises find out where your local UPS collection centre is and get your tracking number if you can manage to get a customer service to speak to. I hope this helps. Shocking, company like this is so hard to get through to someone and system is so messed up. (edited)
  28. 50huz's avatar
Started a live chat with Western Digital on the website chasing the item as it was stuck on processing order since 22 July, they provided a UPS tracking number and advised it had been delivered and to contact UPS directly as I hadn't received the item. Contacted UPS via Twitter with the tracking code and they confirmed the parcel was delivered to a local UPS access point (3 miles away even though 9 other access points were closer) as apparently they attempted delivery.

Finally managed to pick up the item from the access point. Surprising the order tracker isn't working on Western Digital website. (edited)

Thanks op! I have had several recertified WD drives over the years and none has let me down so far- i make multiple copies of all family memories across in the cloud and on physical drives. Just don't want to be a very old man and not have photos/movies etc from years gone by.

But this one will also be used to back up my personal PC and work's laptop as backups save so much hassle its unbelievable.
  34. mixmixi's avatar
    Bargain, heat.
  35. sheffield788's avatar
    Hot, good price.
  36. chischis's avatar
This is what they should normally cost. These drive sizes are paltry in 2022.
    Mr_Chondo's avatar
Depends on usage case - for example load it with films/music and take on holiday. If it gets lost, stolen, etc no great loss.
  37. aks4ever's avatar
If you use health service discount which anyone can register spend over £60 get 15% off then once you got code, use TCB to get 8% atm and use the nhs code you got before for 15 + 8% benefit on top of this offer i did it and it worked for me and it got tracked.
  38. WolvoAndy's avatar
How shock proof are these? I'm not looking to smash them around or anything like that but the external device I currently have for the ps4 needs to be restored every time you slightly move it when it's switched on!
    pjlhot's avatar
When they're spinning I avoid moving them. I have concerns about gyroscopic effects etc.. based on no science whatsoever.
But the only problems I've had have been due to the USB socket being a bit dodgy on an old laptop.
Movement interrupts the connection and sometimes requires a scandisk if I'm unlucky
