From today, Virgin Broadband users, on the M100 and M200 broadband packages are being upgraded to M125 (Previously M100) and M250 (Previously M200)

M100 will be from 108Mbps to 132Mbps with upload speeds also increasing from 10Mbps to 20Mbps and M200 will be from 213Mbps to 264Mbps with upload speeds rising from 20Mbps to 25Mbps

What do i need to do, to get the better speeds?

If not already live, give your Virgin Router a reboot by switching off at the wall, awaiting a couple of mins then switch on again or via the Virgin Media Connect app to benefit from the speed boost.

You can test you speeds here (Free)

Virgin is boasting that customers on M125 could download a 4K film in just 15 minutes compared to it previously taking around 19 minutes, with the time taken for those on M250 reducing from just over 9 minutes to 7 minutes 30 seconds.

Those speed increases are nothing to write home about. You might save a couple minutes here or there on larger files. Unfortunately Virgin broadband has had no competition in last 15years so their prices reflect that. Do the one year contract but advice to immediately use your cancellation as leverage to keep their prices down...

Also all good being fast but nothing is slower than when your connection is down often for "planned maintenance" they don't tell anyone about 😜 never again well not without a 5g backup... (edited)

While we're giving Virgin Media tips: if you spot a problem, go to their status checking page. I did this last month when there was a small outage. They reimbursed me £8 on my next bill. It took no effort at all and the outage was minimal.
    timblake9's avatar
What do you need to do specifically to get reimbursed
  3. Manc101's avatar
Everybody speaking about price increases because of the higher speed. That's not the case, its been long over due. They've been getting the majority of streets from the 350 and 500 to the 1gig availability. Once done they've done back to the speed increases.

Also many here seem to think it's hard work getting a good price as an existing customer.

It's easy, firstly only call first thing in the morning never in the afternoon. Second ring the right number, not just any generic one that Google gives you. Thirdly make sure your current mobile number is correct on your account. Then if the UK retentions team don't get you the best offer or one that you agree on. Simply put in a 30 day disconnection. On all your vm services, tv/bb/home phone.

You'll get a call within a few days. They "save you" for another 18 months.

Finally from the people I know at VM, they hold off the price increases only changing them around march/April, it's usually tied in to the RPI increase in the UK. Or If sky hike the price on sports or movies, VM and other resellers have to follow suit, with in 30 to 60 days

    Hope this helps

Thanks for this @Manc101 - what's the right number to call?

Just changed to virgin broadband yesterday and now CCTV won't work on new router? Any advice grateful. Got hub 3. Was promised hub 5, but typical sales, promising you 1 thing and given another.
    WhaleTrain's avatar
Most of the issues with Wi-Fi can be solved by simply separating out the 2.4 and 5GHz bands - give this a try but the Hub range from VM are notorious for being unreliable and instable.

For anyone in London, check to see if you can get Community fibre. They have much better speeds and reliability than crappy Virgin. Just switched recently, much better. I'm now paying £25 a month for 1000mbps. (edited)

Someone posted about this yesterday. I did a speed check but didn't notice any change....maybe today!

Edit. Seems to have gone through automatically

Did you reset your router? that needs to be done for the increase to take effect
  7. nigelwill's avatar
Yes, I had some disruption last week, and when I tested the speed nest day it was 139Mbit. Just got the Hub 5 also
    odinsmasher28's avatar
    The hub5?

My contract is up in April, will see if Virgin are within their rights to a 'small' increase or will do the same re retentions.
  9. elonmusk's avatar
again, the fundamental question why on earth do you need 100MBps speed anyways unless you live in a barn with hundreds of sheep with head cams live streaming their grazing.
    SnoopZ's avatar
You obviously don't game and have game consoles or download movies or upload lots of photos, I'm guessing you just browse and use email?

100 is actually pretty slow if you have those. (edited)

I've been with Virgin since before they were NTL then Virgin - originally had the cable service from Telecential in Wokingham -. I've not usually had much of a problem negotiating discount each year but last year they just wouldn't budge. I eventually set up a new user in my partner's name, which was a lot cheaper. The day before installation they finally caved in and price matched their own price, but I'm still not wild about the many hours of effort it took me to reach that.
Having said that, their services has nearly always been good to very good for me, and each year I look around for something comparable and I just can't meet the price, for the equivalent. If I could live with a Firestick as my only TV I might be able to thibk about it, but at the moment there are no other provider in my area offering the internet speed, and I'm not rural
    Riyaad12's avatar
I play the game every 18m with VM, never fails, VM account in my wife's name at the moment but come renewal, I'll take over and enjoy the benefits of a new customer. (edited)

my contract was due to ran out in few weeks was going from £28 to £47 100MB , got retention deal £26 for 100MB with 4gb 02 SIM included

doing speedtest currently getting 136 down and 20 up

So all round its worked out pretty well no doubt during the contract price will rise by £2-£3

been with them since blueyonder days everyone else can only offer around 60mb so thankfully Virgin service has been great for me as I have no alternative options unless going for lower speed (edited)
    Ali2021's avatar
I was on m100 + 5GB sim for £20 a month and my contract came to an end at the end of October.

I called outbound retentions last week and they reduced it to £17 for a further 18 months so I accepted it.
  12. GrahamFairham's avatar
Ahhh the pleasure of leaving Virgin, was surprisingly warming.

The joy of saying NO!. After being over a barrel due to a lack of fibre alternatives, and now moving finally moving to one!

    Pleasant.
    Martin_1313's avatar
I was with virgin media for 13 years, finally decided to leave and went with BT, fibre 500 + 6 months xbox game pass for £31 per month for 24 months.

Have to say the install tech with open reach was amazing, it took a few hours but it went in pretty quick.

I've been so happy with my service so far.

I'll pay extra to never go back to virgin media. If I can't find another deal. (edited)
  13. jungleboy123's avatar
Paying £40pm for 200mb, is that too much? Contract up in March.
    wjw's avatar
Yes £40 is very expensive. I renewed mine few months ago to £16 for M100. I doubled it with O2 to M200 using O2 sim.

They offered me M200 for £19 but I didn't think it is worth paying more.

You will have price increase very soon probably before March so phone them then and cancel. Wait few days and tell them what you want to pay per month as they will try to get more out of you. Just be patient and you will get low price.
  14. YinYang's avatar
The way to be 100% sure if you've been upgraded is to go to the router login page, click "Router status" at the upper-right, then "Operation configuration", then look at the max traffic rates for upstream and downstream.

For example, if you're on M250, the downstream max traffic rate will be 287500061 bps, which is 287.5 Mbps.

If you're not seeing the upgrade, give your router a reboot.
    ArticIcon's avatar
This is helpful, I've just upgraded and see a speed of 287500061 in the downstream max traffic rate.

But I only see M200 in the Virgin Media app on my phone.

Also, i applied for Volt when i signed up for the Broadband + Phone service, will I get upgraded to another package above M250?
  15. sid97's avatar
My download still stuck at low 200s, do they have a timeline on when it will all go live?
    umair007's avatar
usually you might get an email update as well saying they have upgraded your speed.
  16. wanderer_forest's avatar
I think virgin is fantastic. Having used Sky, Plusnet, BT and others over the years, Virgin has been almost rock steady for 3 years.

The previous router was a bit rubbish and needed rebooting once a week. I've had the latest router for a while now and it's faultless.

Speeds are great. Never experienced throttling Apparently we use over 1000gb data a month. Given Netflix, Prime and Disney are always on our 4k HDR OLED TV, and I download torrents, that is probably normal.

Virgin are expensive though. I pay £31/month for £250 and it's increasing in Dec - best they could offer was £38 unless I take other services. I'll be playing the retention game in a few weeks.

Below is on my phone connected to US VPN via Nord. Pretty darn fantastic for M250.

If you cancel and wait to speak to outbound retentions you should get a much better deal. My brother and parents both just renewed the M200 (now M250) package for £15 a month and they got the new Hub5 thrown in.

I renewed mine last week and I had the M100 (now M125) plus a 5GB data and unlimited mins and texts sim only for £20 a month for the last 18 months. They offered me the same package for £17 this time for the next 18 months and I also got the new Hub 5 router. I get around 138mbps download and 20+ upload pretty much always everywhere in my house.

Definitely cancel and wait to speak to outbound retentions as even £31 is way too much. Worst case sign up as a new customer and it will still be cheaper.
  17. B_Marvel's avatar
Got it recently installed but only got the hub 4.

Might push for the hub 5 but only need it in modem mode due to the WiFi mesh.

Is there a difference between the 4 and 4 if only using modem mode?
    SnoopZ's avatar
Hub5 has WiFi 6, not that you would use it if in modem mode.

Hub5 gives you 31 downstream channels, not sure what the 4 has.

    Hub5 has a 2.5Gbps ethernet port.

Hub5 doesn't look like a mini kitchen bin. (edited)

I have M100 boosted to M200 with Volt. No change in mine yet.
Anybody already with the Volt boost seen a change?
    kkwiatkowski's avatar
    Yes.
It didn't change in the plan name (still volt m200) but showing average download 264Mb and average upload 25Mb which is exactly what volt m250 supposed to be like
  19. mikechung6's avatar
Mine has upgraded from M200 with volt. Didn’t have to reset router.

The upgrades sound brilliant, until they update their packages, suddenly the price will increase substantially! Been there / done that. Originally 50mb and had 2 free upgrades to 100mbit and then 150mbit, they then renamed the deals and guess which price they started charging! Thanks but no thanks
    uscool's avatar
with price increases during contract they give you option to cancel , and if you select the cancel option when phoning they give option not to increase and stay
  22. strawberrymud's avatar
I pay £19 pm for volt 200 with one Wi-Fi pod booster and then £6 pm for o2 sim with 6gb of data - so £25 all in. Getting Hub 5 delivered next week, hoping it improves things as the current hub drops out daily.
    strawberrymud's avatar
Contact +44 7305 327112 (virgins WhatsApp number) and ask for the Hub 5.
  23. blaster19's avatar
Just signed up to virgin media:
    1gb speeds
    This includes the hub 5
They threw in 3 free wifi extenders
    A stream box
    10gb o2 sim.
    18 month contract
    £41.99.

    Hope this helps anyone

i have virgin boradband and o2 how do i get the double broadband speed ?
    Ash_Rana's avatar
Go onto the O2 app and activate the Volt add on.
  25. gerardgimbert's avatar
Any news on the higher packages getting faster upload? I'm on the gigabit package, get 1160mb down, but only 50 up. Increasing that to 10:1 would be much better than I have now, and make cloud backup much less painful.
    Manc101's avatar
    Nope..

I've already asked the question. The speeds from 350mbps and up are staying the same for now. I believe 1500mbps and 2gig are in the works. They've trialled much higher, but the market doesn't need them and Joe bloggs wouldn't pay for it.
  26. Mike_Ball's avatar
Moving to Virgin media offered me 1gig internet, weekend phone "won't use", a streaming box all for £26!! Better than BT which was costing as 51 pounds!!
    GoWokeGoBroke's avatar
Does anyone use the integrated NON phone line which is not a distinct phone line? I don't, too many spam calls for a new boiler because virgin sell the number for marketing. I have not had a phone line plugged in for years.
  27. Sam2xp's avatar
Just rang virgin media if I could get a better offer since I'm on M250 and paying £40 a month (been with them since NTL days). Nice guy on the phone said he'll ring me back when their Black Friday deals start and will offer me something great. Should be available to both new and old customers
    GoWokeGoBroke's avatar
I remember NTL and Telewest in the north west, i worked for smallworld which was bought by virgin, the speeds are not needed and the price hikes for speeds you do not need is profiteering.
  28. Bigfootpete's avatar
Ha, I reduced my service from 100 to 50, didn't notice any difference. So I doubt anyone will notice these small increases.
    GoWokeGoBroke's avatar
Former virgin and smallworld engineer, you will notice hardly any difference between the 15mbps from a decade ago ( yes i did say 15 ) service. it's a money making exercise.Unless they are throttling you.
make people believe they are getting more for their money, reality is on my 125Mbps i never get above 12 in reality depite what speedtest tells you. try sharing a torrent to someone you know that you created, throttled.

Just open your task manager and look at networking for the truth. Much depends upon what hardware you have, or are using, not the speed. (edited)
  29. kelhaggagi's avatar
I am on M200. I don't need the speed to be increased, just the up-time and reliability increased.
    AnkerMan's avatar
I would keep my current speed and have price reduction. That would be actual deal and worth heat...
  30. hotdroid's avatar
Gig1 sorely needs an upgrade to upload speeds.
  31. DealJourno's avatar
Virgin rarely get near their quoted speeds a lot of the time. Our M350 drops to as low as 15Mbps when we're barely using it.
    Bargainz999's avatar
Never had such issues. Your installation might have damage or something else will be causing issue as in 15 years of my time with Virgin, I've never had such slow speeds. I would get an engineer out ASAP.
  32. SnoopZ's avatar
My M200 was upgraded weeks ago now get 270 down 27 up.

Now listed as M250 on my account. (edited)

Nice update. Gone to 128/20. Lost service a few times last Friday so I guess they were making some changes then.

I had an email last week saying they are doing maintenance on the line but wouldn't get affected, I was getting 216MB for (M200) just checked and now near on 270mb Ive had no problems with Virgin and very happy
  35. LAS00's avatar
And when I join o2 next week it'll get doubled for free 😁
    Superdry009's avatar
Watch out, they have the poorest service in my area but I do put up with it for the double home internet
  36. LennyKravitz's avatar
I just got 'upgraded' from M250 to 125, pretty much sums up my dealings with virgin media!
  37. ChilliPakoda's avatar
Great. Thanks for the quick update.
  38. Somnus's avatar
Just in case anyone has any info: anyone know if there'll be an upgrade for 50mb customers like me? Not on the social tariff, just on a basic package. Isn't mentioned so I'm guessing not (and haven't seen an increase today) but strange to be left behind really
    Andy_67X's avatar
Maybe worth getting the cheapest o2 tariff you can find, then that way you'll be added to "volt". There maybe other ways.
