Potato crop didn't do well this year due to no rains in summer.. this compounded with the problems for energy price crisis..

Amazing how many people are willing to blindly defend big monopoly business. Nobody expects prices to remain the same, but nobody wants to be ripped off from extra profiteering on top either.

As someone said near the top of the thread, if you don't think the supermarkets aren't going to take advantage of the various crises happening in the UK and EU, you should maybe give your head a wobble and wait for the next earnings reports from these companies. Just looking at the very limited data Tesco give out, revenue is up and so are earnings, by a considerable amount than before COVID / brexit. Doesn't matter if your profit margins are small if you sell a bit of everything in huge quantities.

People need to make more noise about these issues as they're only going to get much worse.

Chips are caked in sunflower oil.

Remind me again which country most of the world's sunflower oil comes from...

Same reason crisps have shot up.

The Hash Brown (Frozen) were 69p 2 months ago now £1.29 at LIDL.

Also Chunky Veg/Meat Soup Can was 49p now 72p (edited)

Didn't know freezers were powered by free electricity

I have found Morrisons to be the worst for price hikes lately. Some of their prices compared to the other supermarkets are ridiculous. Plus they never have any offers on

Their wafer thin ham is now £2.99 😳

For all this commenting saying potatoes have gone up in price due to a bad yield due to no rain and electricity has gone up etc. Do you really think these companies will put the prices down when it isn't the case. No they won't. Companies are profiteering more now than they ever have. Oil giant companies are making billions per day in pure profit whilst we all just sit back and take it.

I agree . The working are repeatedly told there is no money for them and they shouldn't ask for pay rises while alot of larger companies are boasting of record profits and giving huge bonuses to managing directors / shareholders .look at royal mail who's profit nearly doubled last year and the staff are demonised for daring to ask for more money / better conditions

Do you seriously think companies aren't taking advantage of the incessant daily news feeds trumpeting cost of living crisis and energy crisis?

that's normal guys... it will be only get worst price wise some people still don't understand/ don't believe it , that BREXIT will bite us all in a** . On top of that war in Ukraine ( ukraine is called 'Granary of Europe , if you don't believe it Google it , TOP 5 agricultural countries:)) , fuel crisis to make it cherry on TOP :D:D . Lidl , ALDI are germany supermarkets they have been leaders because when UK was in EU they could 'just throw it thru borders their own stuff ( 'Spanish week, Italian week' stuff) as cheap as possible with no hassle at all !!

Cheapest tissues was like 99p for big box in LIDL their own brand. Been there yesterday 1.59 £ now . They are updating prices daily chips are from 1.29£ to 1.59£ tomorrow maybe 2£ ?:D It's bad and will get only worst...

It's sad but true that if you don't do some job that you need qualification (worked in retail for years never again ) like I.T , Doctor, Dentist , engineer etc. it's getting REALLY BAD. (edited)

and guess what..... The big supermarkets know this, so they release what's called 'ALDI price match'. Therefore they know ALDI and LIDL will raise prices.

ALDI and LIDL are no longer the bargain stores we once had... ALDI especially as they dont offer voucher codes/coupons, whereas LIDL and other big supermarkets regularly give discounts for your loyalty...

ALDI/LIDL will need to adapt if they are to survive.

I noticed their W5 bleach went from 39p to 49p then 60p. Quite a jump.

Greed is rife and yet when we were in the EU all was well in the UK?

    Hmmm (edited)

It's true. Every supermarket except of lidl have lowered the price of essential 1kg of porridge to 70p. Lidl 1kg essential porridge 75p or 78p. I bought porridge from lidl and then walked into sainsburys and was surprised to see Sainsbury's daily basic porridge cheaper than lidl's I just bought!
It is happening because people still think lidl is still the cheapest but it's not! (edited)
  15. jungleboy123's avatar
right.... LIDL is insanely expensive. Been today £40 gone, didnt even get any meats or anything. Idk what the hell i spent but it was expensive.

    Going back to ALDI now.

Does OP know how much the price of potatoes has gone up recently?

Could be that the Straight cut chips are sourced from one company and the crinkle cut chips from another, overheads at company making the Crinkle cut may be higher, perhaps different oil/potatoes variety. They may just cost more to make....

A fairer comparison would be how much a 1.5Kg bag of Crinkle cut chips costs form the other supermarkets.

I certainly wouldn't call it blatant profiteering as its commonly known that all of the raw materials in this product have increased significantly in price.

blatant profiteering is when a product is sold at a higher price purely because of high demand with no cost increase in base materials and distribution....

Ive been saying for ages about lidl price rises, just as cheap to go elsewhere now.
  22. Azwipe's avatar
Tesco own brand frozen chips went from £1.80 to £2.30 in a week. Same everywhere, the days of cheap food and goods is over.

The only decent priced items in Tesco are the ones with Aldi Price Match stickers. It's nice of Tesco to advertise just how much cheaper Aldi is
  24. pfagan10's avatar
This is modern life unfortunately. We stumble from crisis to crisis meanwhile everyone is profiteering on the back of it. As stated above, then things go well prices do not reduce, but be sure you will pay more if there's an issue. Just need to shop around OP.

Bread 72p white thick sliced in Aldi, in M&S it was 70p!

Lidl put up the price of cat treat sticks from 69 to 99p. Linda McCartney burgers went from 1.19 to 1.99 and they had the cheek to put up a sign afterwards saying 'always Lidl on price'. My local one never has anything in stock anyway. I pop in to get onion rings and I'm lucky if I get any one in three visits. I wouldn't go at all except I can't get decent onion rings anywhere else. I refuse to shop there for much else these days. Tesco has choice, decent value and most importantly plenty of offers which are always changing. Lidl prices have gone through the roof.

Same 1.5kg chips but with straight edge selling at 25% cheaper. Must be massively lower production and marketing costs along with a lower margin ?

    Same??

    Same = identical, not different.

So if one crinkle and one straight, clearly not the “same”

Chips are apparently up 38%, so 23% is a bargain!

One very small example of increased costs in the supply chain of frozen and fresh products. Red Diesel no longer able to be used in the refrigeration units in the vehicles delivering from supplier to DC and DC to Store, followed by the next hit of the general increase in fuel pricing which also affects the costs to deliver. That's before we talk about, staff, electric, raw materials for production etc.

We are all paying for this war prices up due to the war.

I only ever cheated on ALDI with LIDL once.

Looks like I'll be staying faithful (even if ALDI seems to be slowly becoming a high priced escort too)
