I remember using these for fuel in 2020, does it still work? Also can it be used to purchase another gift card?

48679716-xVwtt.jpgYes, the guy who says you can’t is confused and wrong.
Any Tesco giftcard bought in store can be used for fuel. What the guy above is confused about is that Tesco stopped accepting corporate Tesco gift cards (bought via 3rd party such as perks at work) and e-gift cards towards fuel.
“From March 26th, 2018 Tesco will no longer be accepting any Tesco Corporate Gift Cards and digital eGiftcards in its petrol stations.“

I’m still using these gift cards towards fuel as stocked up as they have 5 year expiry.

Here is Tesco terms regarding this:

What can I buy with a Tesco gift card?

Tesco gift cards can be used to buy items in-store, including at Tesco Cafés. They can also be used for fuel, excluding Esso fuel, when paid for at the kiosk

Although the bonus card has to be used in December does the main card have a longer expiry date?
    CrunchyFrog's avatar
Main card expiry is 5 years from last use date (purchase date also counts as use). [Card will also likely expire after balance reaches zero.]

Pay with chase for extra 1% or extra 1.5% if unlocked with Monese or extra 2% with Zilch.

Yes these ones you can. See the post OP did in response to someone else a little further down

Hmm, could I use my wife's company gift card (with 4% cashback) to buy one of these? I don't suppose that I could use the £8 off an £80 spend....
    stardust2741's avatar
You can't buy a gift card with a giftcard. I work for Tesco I believe it's to do with money laundering, but unless you get an inexperienced cashier this will be rejected, will be in the t&c for the giftcard. Also you can't use money off vouchers to buy giftcards either. It will be on the back of the voucher. (edited)
  6. hazzabeee's avatar
Assume you can use the (regular/bonus) gift card for onoline purchases?
    Juzza12's avatar
You can’t use regular gift cards for online shops.

    Tesco Extra Handforth Dean.
Can’t purchase any gift cards at basket self checkout.
Can’t purchase any gift cards at trolley self checkout.
Can’t currently purchase any gift cards at a manned till (so I was told due to “new software”).
Can only purchase at customer services desk which has limited opening hours.

Pity. The manned tills (using an appropriate sensible person, not a chippy jobsworth) used to let you buy however many cards you want, and pay with existing gift cards. (edited)

I have starhub (through work) and you can buy a reloadable card with a 4% discount. Can I use this for fuel? Would that be classed as corporate? It doesn’t specify anywhere.
    Galalad's avatar
Yes any card purchased through a third-party is classed as corporate as you have already received a discount on the card. So only cards purchased in-store can be used for fuel.

Can a £50 giftcard be used with a £30 shop? So I have £20 left for the next shop.
Or would I need to use the giftcard in 1 big £50+ groceries shop?
    Bargainatix's avatar
You can use it for a smaller shop and save the rest for another time.

I'd be surprised if anyone at Tesco's is going to go out the back and look for them.
If they're anywhere they'll be on the main gift card display (or possibly on a rack along the belt at manned checkouts/customer service).

I don't think anyone has ever found them (over the years) in an Express.
I've never found them in a Metro.
I found them in two Extras this year. They had all gone a couple of days later.
I've not looked in a Superstore or if there is any other kind of Tesco, them neither.

If that sounds a bit blunt, I don't mean it that way - basically you just have to have to be in the right place at the right time (by chance). They need to be the ones in the picture above.

It's also possible, but not guaranteed, that a shop will put some out, sell them all, and a few days later put some more out.

Nobody had heard of it in Sunderland today. Not on any till or the gift card section either. (edited)

I had the same at one store in Nottingham; while at another store they were all stacked up. Seems to be selected stores, no idea why. (edited)

I wish they'd cut these gimmicks (along with "clubcard prices") and just reduced their prices.
    Kartnet's avatar
They do that so that they can limit the number of purchase per product and also so they can collect data
  14. DangerousBeans's avatar
So free money/groceries. You're in effect paying in advance for your shopping

Could buy the card, get the bonus card and use it to pay for another card, I guess. Making Switch eshop, Xbox and other cards cheaper. (edited)

Can the gift cards be used to pay online for grocery deliveries or are they for use in-store only?
    dm01's avatar
I have some Tesco e-gift cards and they can't be used online for groceries, not sure if this is the same but I don't think they have the facility to accept any from memory.

The usual participating stores are listed here in the link to last year's thread. However, actually finding the cards has been pretty hit-and-miss. Over the past week, I've tried Walkden, Stockport, Gorton, Oldham, Chadderton and Hattersley but only Hattersley and Oldham had them out. I think it could depend on store management when/if they put the cards out on display.

I used to park in Tesco and charge up my van have a wander around the Tesco looking for bargains, then do my weekly shop at Aldi down the road. Even the "Aldi price match" items are overpriced!
  30. dallaker's avatar
I'm guessing that the cashier has to activate the bonus card as well upon purchase?
    CrunchyFrog's avatar
I believe it's automatic. There's the product barcode (same on all of these cards), which is scanned and then one unique barcode scanned for the pair (£50+£5) of giftcards. You only get one activation receipt for £50. (edited)

I might as well get this. From the comments it looks like I can use it on clothes or fuel and just get a free fiver!

Does anyone have a list of participating stores? My local has them every year but don’t have any in so far this year 😞
  39. varunadas's avatar
My Extra store has so far not stocked them. I missed purchase of these last year as I forgot to carry my Amex card on which I had to do a large spend but after the week they were all gone.
  40. MOeg's avatar
Any list of stores that carry those gift cards? Or is it possible to buy them online? They don't seem to be on tescogiftcards.com unless I'm not looking properly
