Aldi UK to close online operations in 2023 - including online specialbuys

Being reported that Aldi will be closing it's online operations/business later this year to concentrate on in store expansion from 950 to 1000 stores. This includes no longer having online Specialbuys (will be in store only) and no longer being able to order wines/spirits online. Not sure at the moment if this would mean they also remove the ability to click and collect for groceries.

Currently no comment from Aldi on job losses but but said it hoped any affected staff would be able to take other opportunities at the growing supermarket. An Aldi spokesperson said: “We are working with our colleagues to understand the impact of this change for our people.“

No date has yet been agreed on the date to close online operations

Aldi email from this morning:62806-ovZLV.jpgTL;DR: With almost 1,000 Aldi stores now open in the UK, and over 200 stores offering our Click and Collect service, we’ve made the difficult decision to stop selling wine and spirits on our website for home delivery in the coming weeks.

If you have ordered wines and spirits from us online before, thank you, and we hope you can visit us in store soon.

You may have also heard about changes to our online Specialbuys service too. But don’t worry, we’re not making any changes just yet so keep your eyes peeled for some amazing Specialbuy offers appearing online in the coming months.

Great because I do buy their Specialbuys online (especially if it's something that disappears quickly in store). When they upload new items seems a bit random when they've been delayed, though. (Missed the Lacura Bonded range because of this). (edited)

I work at Aldi and we had notification that this isn't the end of the Aldi online and to 'watch this space'. Click and collect is still continuing. Their main reason for this change is to keep costs down for customers so they don't bottleneck too many resources towards online, and instead focus on in store experience

I wish every other supermarket had the same attitude.

First Tesco Direct (RIP) and now ALDI

I'm hoping it'll switch to Click & Collect for most but fingers crossed!

Probably be like it was before with Aldi and Lidl where you could see the magazine in digital form but not actually buy anything

Per the post above it's just the booze they are stopping online orders for.

I just admit I've only ever used it once, but anything like this is surely a retrograde step.

Click & Collect requires additional staff in stores and a far bigger inventory. I am not sure they will pay the higher rent and business rates to expand store capacity.

First amazon announcing closure of depots, now this.

Recession is looming, if it isnt already here.

If it's like the last recession the discounters basically stopped holding/selling larger items and offers went onto smaller more essential items.

If they want to follow a similar route this time around there's no point having staff to send out one item here and there when they can send products to store and potentially increase basket spend on other impulse items. I'm surprised they haven't done this sooner. Are there many people go into an Aldi to buy a special buy and don't buy something else whilst there?

Not special buys, but I typically go into Aldi to buy one item and don't get anything else. Primarily because the vegan selection is usually pretty poor so nothing catches my eye (I'm vegan) - Veganuary is an exception though as they have a huge range of vegan options. Unfortunately they'll get rid of them in a month (I contacted them asking if the new additions are permanent and they said no), so I don't really want to try the new items in case I love them and can't have them again as of February.

But my short answer is, I'll usually be able to go into Aldi and buy ketchup or something and leave without buying anything else (edited)

This seems to be a completely backwards step. The future of retail is online
