I know nothing about turntables & amps, but would like to get back into vinyl. Is this a good deal?

Depends how much money you want to spend… if you are dipping your toe in it’s fine … if you seriously want to back to vinyl the speakers won’t cut it….. amp is ok … but as has been pointed out no phono stage.

Ive got a audiolab 6000a play amp which has a built in phono stage …. It’s ok . But ve also got a dedicated headphone setup with a phono stage that’s not far off the price of the amp itself …. It creams it for sound.

if you are coming in completely cold to hifi seperates a good starting point is £300-£500 for new… you can buy ALOT better 2nd hand / clearance .

Hey guys, I've seen this offer a few times, but was holding out for the Pro-Ject Jukebox E to drop in price (I don't think it will)

Is the Pro-Ject Jukebox E a good starting point looks like I'll just need to add speakers?

    Any advice is appreciated 🏽🍻
    bornagainst's avatar
Yeah, add a pair of passive speakers to the Jukebox E and away you go. Not bad at all.... Although it's not particularly cheap in my humble opinion.

Bargain for anyone stepping in to start their vinyl collection.

Having grown up with vinyl I was glad to see the back of them when digital got good enough.

It was the fragility of the medium which often resulted in noise and the hassle of changing tracks that was its downside.

However, I do miss the artwork and still have the original albums taking up a large amount of room.

Therefore I was a bit surprised by its resurgence and somehow feel I am missing something.

Like you, grew up with vinyl then started to adopt CD’s when they came along as the hardware you played them on allowed you to select the tracks you wanted to play without all the faff of having to get up and change the track. Then I ripped all my CD’s when the software became widely available and I was able to copy that onto an SD card and put it on my phone. Never thought I’d sign up to a streaming service but did! Now its even easier to select the music you want to hear, whether shouting to Alexa or choosing it on a phone or device via an app!

I do still miss ‘owning’ the physical media, you can’t better vinyl and its packaging, I still have a dozen or so of my favourite album sleeves framed and hanging on the wall… pieces of art in their own right. My most cherished two are New Order’s ‘Everything’s Gone Green’ and Joy Division’s ‘Atmosphere/She’s Lost Control’ 12 Singles which I got signed by New Order back in 1984 when they played at a nightclub in Southampton! With a friend, we’d waited outside the stage door when their roadie came out and saw us, me clasping the record sleeves and he asked us me if I wanted to meet the band… er ‘Yes please’!! He took us backstage and the four of them were just sat there chilling out having a drink… Hooky asked me if I wanted those signed and all four duly signed both 12 singles! I forget which of the four said it but when it came to signing the Joy Division sleeve one said ‘good choice’ I was 16 and awe struck in front of my favourite band! I’ve dined out on that story for almost 40 years! So, vinyl has a special place in my heart, I’m glad I never sold any of my collection and I’m enjoying playing it again! (edited)

    It's a bargain and a good setup if you dipping your toes . . . .

Dusted off my Technics 1210's a few months ago after they sat in the loft gathering dust for the past 15 years and so pleased I never got rid of them or my vinyl collection. Who'd have thought vinyl would see a resurgence in popularity but I for one am glad it has! My kids, all teenagers now had never seen a vinly record played LOL!

Lucky you! I sold my 1210s in my late teens and I sorely regret it. They’re pretty damn expensive now and I’d love a set again. I have a Pro-Ject Carbon table and it sounds fantastic, but given that I still have my old trance/house collection, I’d love to be able to do a few mixes again! Plus they’re just generally fantastic tables. (edited)

I see the Project Primary E (5 stars at What Hifi) is on offer to members for £100 (!?) with a "qualifying purchase of Hifi over £100" richersounds.com/pro…tml

BTW, I have been buying from Richer Sounds since the 80s and they are one of the few shops I would trust the staff to give helpful (to me) recommendations.
    lumsdot's avatar
yes the project is a way better turntable, so if the amp is 250 and the diamond 9s are 80 for vip customers
then the total would be 430.

This deal comes round every now and then, and I don't think you can do better for the money. Not even close.
Amp is the strong point, so plenty of upgrade potential (although no phono stage, so needs a turntable with one)
    RidXIII's avatar
The Denon turntable has a built-in phono stage, so this should be OK, right?
  9. Joshimitsu91's avatar
How does the turntable compare to the Audio Technica LP60?
    bornagainst's avatar
They're very similar. Could even be the same cartridge / stylus and very possibly built in the same factory. It's a tried and trusted design.

The Denon deck in fairness is a bargain at that price but quality isnt great, I went in RS when they last had this same deal on in January and upgraded the deck , paid a bit more but so glad i did, system cost me £100 more but at least i know i wont then have to replace it

Does the amp come with a remote control? Tia

    No

    Hey

This seem like a great deal, and looking for a turntable

The DP-29F is belt driven, would a direct drive be better, even second hand?

How does it compare to a Audio Technica ?

With regards to the amp and speakers, how does this compare to with my current DM31 with 30w Mission speakers, is this an upgrade?
    bornagainst's avatar
If you are unsure, I'd buy this setup new rather than a second hand setup that might have been abused.

I'm a big fan of direct drive turntables, but you tend to need to know a bit about them. Belt drive is also absolutely fine.

Oh dear - sounds like a load of rubbish

    Great deal.

Also Richer Sounds customer service, particularly instore is amazing.

I got a Denon turntable from there a year or so ago. Encountered a fault which would be covered by the manufacturer's 24 month warranty. Took it into the Liverpool store and a helpful member of staff fixed the issue on the spot, no need to send it away and back home playing lovely vinyl within the hour
  17. ian18's avatar
    Is this belt driven?

    Which I think is preferable?

Anyone know of any good speaker/amp deals? This looks great but I don't need the player.

Does this deal ever come around in colours other than grey?
  21. Excalibur10's avatar
Cute lil belt drive , ok speakers and what appears to be an amp .not sure who the target market is but I’m sure there will be some oldies out there
  22. eurovnik's avatar
Good value package. The only drawback with this is that I don't think the tracking force or anti-skate force can be adjusted on the turntable which means the stylus can't be easily upgraded to an elliptical or microlinear stylus if better sound quality is wanted. That may not be an issue. It all depends on how fussy you are, the type of music you want to listen to and its dynamic range - if you want Daft Punk Around the World or a Bruckner symphony with full frequency response and without distortion (by vinyl standards) a stylus upgrade will be needed. 50s rock and roll or a string quartet, this will probably be fine.
  23. y_knot_me's avatar
I've had these speakers and they are really good for the money. I had an earlier version of the amp and was really impressed, it took some abuse before it packed in 2 years ago.
  24. FestiveCheer's avatar
Ok. So I’ve gone ahead and agreed to take one of these set ups. I emailed my local store, and the turntable is out of stock there, but he is ordering it in.

However. He told me it doesn’t come with speaker cable. I don’t want to spend stupid money on some. Can any clever Bod here have a look on RS and direct me to something that will do? No more than £10?

10 for the lot or 10 per metre?? Haha! Not sure if you’re joking!!
QED 79 has been on my humble system since I bought it in 1990 and as Fluteboy on here suggests ‘it does the job nicely’ at about 2 quid a metre:
