    Good news for you then - SAD lamps (the right type) do work, and this is certified as a medical device. Check out the evidence.

    As I learned from my dad, who once bought one of these for my mum as a Christmas present, and then spent the rest of the day in his shed... Do not buy a loved one a Christmas gift that says "merry Christmas, you look sad"
