Been waiting for the 16TB Recertified unit to come up after missing the previous deal on HUKD where it cost around £350. Not sure if that deal will come back again at that price so went for this pricier deal. I think this is a good deal for the 24TB version. Hoping responses don't give me buyers remorse.

Thought I would add these links, so people can read up on raid. Before asking any more silly questions. Due to, a general lack of knowledge of the topic. No offence to anyone!

No such thing as "silly questions".
    Silly answers do exist though.

Would RAID allow for 3 drives to be independent with the fourth as their back up, or is that not how it works?
I have only ever needed the drives I am using, and know nothing of RAID

Hi, RAID 5 will generally do what you are asking. However, as somebody mentioned, if you went with something like True NAs, then you could just use the very handy ZFS system. Either of them will work along the lines of (so long as the 4 x drives are the same capacity) of using 3 or more of them and the 'spare' drive will be the size of one of them or the largest disk in the array, whichever is largest. as long as you try to keep all of your disks the same size, then the redundancy will be one drive. ZFS is a more scaleable solution, as it will allow for new disks over time etc. But for a build it and go solution, RAID 5 on 4 drives, giving 3 of them as capacity and one as a redundant drive will generally do what you need. TrueNAS solutions and Synology has proprietary RAID versions thee days that allow a hybrid set-up, which are all variations on RAID 5 in it's simplest terms. For the price, this is a good solution and if set up as RAID 5 you should be good to go in reality for a very good price. So plug it in, set it up as RAID 5 and away you go!! ;-p

Currently have four Western Digital Gold 4TB 6gb speed HDD's.

I would love to expand my storage for the Xbox Series X (can expand up to 16TB=14.5TB).

I'm guessing a 4 bay (Raid 5) enclosure would do the job but have no idea which one to buy.

Any recommendations from experienced users please?

I’d avoid WD NAS units. Go with QNAP or Synology.

To be fair it doesn't really require much compute to service up a bunch of files. That only becomes an issue if you plan to run various apps/"appliances" ie, bittorrent, pfsense, media centre etc.

Ideally you want a NAS to use as little power as possible, especially given today's crazy electric prices

I would think 4 x 6GB drives. as for HD model WD do 2 editions of the red drive I think. One being designed for NAS drives.

Would this be suitable for running as a Plex server?

Sort of maybe, but no I won't recommend it. What do you do with your Plex server? You probably won't be able to do much transcoding with this.

After a long thought went for Synology DS220+. My old HP Microserver wasn't really good for Plex as it couldn't do any transcoding and neither could this EX4100. Even though that's only 2 bay model (edited)

I actually thought this was spam at first because the entire email is an image. What cowboys do they seriously have managing their web presence you could probably bet money on it being in unsecured MongoDB database
