The 256gb storage is slower on the M2 than it was on the M1, due to it being a single unit rather than split into two on the M1.

Cheaper than both Apple's student store and refurbished store. (edited)

It’s much faster than the 2016 MBP I want to replace, and despite 7 years of crazy inflation it’s cheaper than that laptop was brand new. It’s still a hot deal.

There's a common recurring joke with Apple products that no Apple fan can deny. When a new model comes out, all the Apple supporting outlets tell the fans to buy it "because it is so much better than the rubbish Apple last gen, with its bad display, webcam and keyboard". When the next model comes out, the outlets will say exactly the same about this model. I'm not kidding. The first review I found for this said exactly that about the M1 version.

If Apple tech was actually good, would Apple encourage this type of marketing hype?

Anyway, they are unreliable across time, having terrible engineering faults that tend to show up after the warranty period is up (quelle surprise). Of course Apple would argue its state-of-the-art design is only made for around 3 years of continuous use, after which you go buy a new model. But then again form follows function, so of course they are made delicate and flimsy, with no physical space to engage in more reliable engineering- which is why they sell on this trend. Sadly, as Apple starts to deploy 'super-computer' SoC designs, the actual potential of the chip, even when you can find software that runs on it, is crippled by the form factor- which I find quite sad.

Just some advice - the same i give everyone considering Apple products - buy them direct via apple instead of resellers as its worth the extra little bit.

I've had numerous out of warranty repairs done on my macbooks for free under consumer law claims and they have never been difficult or resistant when requested. My macbook 2017 has had a graphics issue after 6 years of use and they are even going to replace it with a new model. If you buy from resellers, this wouldn't be possible or as easily done as they need to send to authorised repairers to assess etc.

Apple are fantastic with aftercare and its why i always buy direct via them, its worth that piece of mind.

Edit - also - always go for the 16gb RAM! trust me it makes a huge difference and should be the minimum now! (edited)

But that's not possible. All apple fan boys say the device is perfect and they don't develop any issues, will last forever and outperform any device out there for years to come.

Great price for an M2 shame about the low RAM and storage.

£1k laptop and Apple cheaps out on RAM/storage which is normal strategy to extract even more out of its customers

Make them pay £100+ for 16GB and double storage that's standard in rival products (edited)

Great deal. 250 quid cheaper than RRP!

I personal have the M1 base spec air which will do me fine for years to come. The midnight colour has the allure and the professor is definitely quicker. Other comments are correct that the SSD is slower but in day to day tasks I’m sure you won’t notice.

If I didn’t have the M1 I’d be on this in a flash.

If you do a lot of video calls, I’d actually stump up for the M2 for the better camera.

It’s insane that they still made the M1 with that old garbage webcam, but that’s apple for you.

60Hz screen is perfect for what it does
8gb is far better on Mac OS than Windows, very few people using this as a basic laptop will need more.
hard drive is fin3, just slower at intensive read/write tasks than the 512gb, but still faster than a physical drive by a long way.
How is the OS outdated? It’s the latest one.

So we don’t have to wait 15minutes for our Windows laptops to force restart because of a update to some botched drivers that are incompatible with another piece of janky software designed by a donkey.

Zenbook s13 OLED is also the same price at Currys and is a much more superior device.

    16gb RAM (LPDDR5)
    512gb ssd (Gen 4 speeds)
Ryzen 7 6800u (rDNA graphics)(Power efficient) Much better GPU
    2.8k oled display touchscreen
    67Whr battery (Up to 19hrs)
    Under 1kg
    Magnesium alloy unibody
    Active cooling solution
    Dolby Atmos
    User replaceable ssd
    And most importantly...
    No ugly notch

I really don't get the hype with the air series.

My M1 Air should last me at least another five years, by which time I’m hopeful that the base Air will (possibly) come with 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM. (edited)

I replaced a 64GB 2017 iMac with a 8/512 M2 mini - so far not found anything the mini can’t do that the iMac could 🤷‍♂️

It really is a great little machine

This is undoubtedly the lowest price I have seen in the UK. I actually bought one of these in South Korea and the price difference was only a few pounds. I am still waiting for a VAT refund from South Korea which would make it even cheaper, but I am confident that you won’t find a better deal anywhere else in UK. Good value for money.

Really tempted by this as my iPad Pro is getting a little old and I’m thinking of going back to a laptop device.

Has anyone got experience of running iPad apps on MacBooks - just wondering if this works well?

Also does anyone have the midnight colour, does it scratch and mark easily? Ta

Midnight does seem to scratch unfortunately, eg around the USB ports, which is a shame. Might be less of an issue if you’re aware and very careful.

cant comprehend low 256gb and 8gb specs when their real cost is peanuts, put on expensive machine

Can you comprehend that the mac doesnt work in the same way as a windows, so the specs are comparable like to like?
