a brand new £399 laptop that comes with a pathetic 256 gig hard drive, anyway it should be classed as a notebook and not a laptop cos does not have a dvd drive

It's 2023. What has a DVD drive got to do with anything? They haven't been standard in laptops in over a decade. It's a 256GB solid-state disk and almost everything in this price range comes with the same storage. Very strange complaints...

The spec is OK for the price, not spectacular.
What would concern me is the touch screen. No idea why, but the two HP Pavillion touchscreen laptops I bought in the last couple of years both started suffering with image retention after a couple of weeks.

Seems pretty solid price wise, the Pavilion build quality is abnormally good these days (better than years ago) and almost all the system is now metal. Touchscreen is usually for higher-end machines and the i3-1215U in this can outperform last generation's i7s.

As to your image retention, could it be heat? We've had some hot weather. It won't be the touchscreen, it's a physically separate component. It's rare to see retention issues on modern LCDs though, but there were a few high profile cases years back (Retina iMacs and Pixelbooks).

are currys warranty still the same,as in if your electronic appliance develops a fault within 1 month you can choose to replace it or get a refund, but if it developes a fault after 1 month all they will ever do is try to repair it within 1 month and keep on doing that till the end of warranty,if it develops a fault again within the warranty that they cannot fix they will offer you a replacement but will never ever offer a full refund , you have all been warned
