    Speed not a huge issue as very infrequent, reliability is important as stuff might sit on it for a few yrs untouched.

    This one is cheap enough for what it is, so I see no point making one yourself. There are decent flash drives available too. But if speed is not important, you can get a 'regular' portable hard drive, much cheaper. There are often deals posted here for WD recertified at cheap prices. However, portable SSD or flash drives are more compact. (edited)

    There is a 960gb Kingston internal SSD on hukd. Get it and a an enclosure for £5 on Amazon and save yourself a few quid.

    Yes you can assemble a lower cost portable ssd, but stability and heat cannot be guaranteed.
