Bought the 4Tb version about two weeks ago. Was dead on arrival making a strange noise. Had to return, waiting on refund

I've bought 4TB Recertified 3-4 years ago and is still working fine. So all depends on luck I guess.

I want to place my important pictures & documents on this. Don't really want to be relying on luck

had about 10 refurbs of different sizes from here all perfect, even out lasted some new ones of the same make from elsewhere

that's very expensive for a pre-owned 5tb Portable HDD. I got mine for about £40 brand new. If it's anything like mine be careful because you can't shuck them and use them as internal drives because they're massively thick.

Pre-owned? or Recertified? Please be clear.

WD will still be asking £70 for these when new 4TB SSD's are down to a ton God bless 'em! Stone-age rust-based tech but only one careful user - buy now while stocks last! Until the next skip-load arrives at WD HQ of course. (edited)

I see what you are saying but this is 5TB approx half the price of a 4TB SSD, no caddy or heat sink required and perfectly fine for something like watching movies on a TV.

Be careful using the WD website. They recently had a data breach, publishing partial credit card details, etc.
