Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2.

Playing as Alyx Vance, you are humanity’s only chance for survival. The Combine’s control of the planet since the Black Mesa incident has only strengthened as they corral the remaining population in cities. Among them are some of Earth’s greatest scientists: you and your father, Dr. Eli Vance.

As founders of a fledgling resistance, you’ve continued your clandestine scientific activity—performing critical research, and building invaluable tools for the few humans brave enough to defy the Combine.

Every day, you learn more about your enemy, and every day you work toward finding a weakness.

ABOUT GAMEPLAY IN VR:

Valve’s return to the Half-Life universe that started it all was built from the ground up for virtual reality. VR was built to enable the gameplay that sits at the heart of Half-Life.

Immerse yourself in deep environmental interactions, puzzle solving, world exploration, and visceral combat.

Lean to aim around a broken wall and under a Barnacle to make an impossible shot. Rummage through shelves to find a healing syringe and some shotgun shells. Manipulate tools to hack alien interfaces. Toss a bottle through a window to distract an enemy. Rip a Headcrab off your face and throw it out the window.

COMMUNITY-BUILT ENVIRONMENTS

A set of Source 2 tools for building new levels is included with the game, enabling any player to build and contribute new environments for the community to enjoy through Half-Life: Alyx's Steam Workshop. Hammer, Valve’s level authoring tool, has been updated with all of the game's virtual reality gameplay tools and components.

Very much doubt it, it was originally a thing that spawned out the back of making “The Lab” to promote the Valve VR headsets, the original thing didn’t make it into The Lab, but became the basis of HL Alyx

I'm guessing there's no budget way to go VR just for this is there?

Do you have a gaming PC? If so you could buy a used WMR headset (like a Samsung Odyssey) or an old Oculus Rift or Rift S, or basically any cheap PCVR headset. Or a Quest 1/2 and use a Link cable. You do need a decent PC though.

Still by far the best experience to be had in VR

An excellent VR experience and don’t forget the mods for this game “Gunman Contracts” is especially good!!

I think a lot of people overlook the Steam workshop support in games. They can add a lot of value to games, and Half Life Alyx is one of those games that destroys the VR competition so having additional content for the game is worth while.

And then there is the cross over mods. Portal in VR?

This game bored me to death and I adored HL1 and 2 growing up, Valve made my favourite games and this game was such a disappointment. First of all it isn't Half Life, it doesn't feel like it or play like it and even Alyx doesnt sound the same because they got another actress in against the originals will. However gameplay wise it wasn't even good when it came out in 2020 compared to VR games in 2016 that did stuff much better. I would say Rec Room is a much much better VR game and oh yeah Alyx doesn't even have melee..... Like wut? Half Life and a crowbar go hand in hand and this game doesn't have melee? It feels bad as a result and you're always running out of ammo too.

I can tell you the gameplay loop... You "walk" around looking for resin and ammo, you go to a resin station to solve the easiest "puzzles" and then you shoot really stupid A.I that poses no threat and I played it on the hardest setting.

The more i think about it the more I hate this game for being so crap and the story is like.... whatever.... :/ Your character talking totally ruins it, the great thing about Valve games in the past is everyone always talks to you, but this game is written like every other game.

I really hope Valve can turn it around, but the last good thing they made was Portal 2.

They should have bought the Superhot guys and made a VR game using that like they bought the Portal guys and made a game around that mechanic. (edited)

ALYX, Its staggeringly good, best VR experience i ever had, ruined VR for me, hence have never used the G2 since, and that was 15 months ago.

Best VR game I've played. Graphically it is the best looking game, and the gameplay and story is great. The actual physics is only bettered by boneworks, but I think it'll be years before this VR game is topped!

I’ve an oculus quest and access to a laptop with a 4080 in it, has anyone had any experience with combining the two to get a good experience on this game?

Really strong 5ghz wi-fi made a huge difference for me. Also paying for the Virtua Desktop app is better than the free app.
BTW I used a 980ti and it was great

This game is so good I've now completed it 4 times on different difficulty settings, truly amazing! Be prepared for a twisty ending also
    Arber_Haliti's avatar
Delete that last bit. It's not the same experience if people are expecting something to happen at the end after they've been told that the ending is twisty :forehead

Great game but wayyyyy to short and not enough free roaming to enjoy. It is all set paths which is nothing like the previous Half Life games. Cmon Valve you could and should have done much better with this.

Has anyone had any experience with playing Alyx on Oculus Rift VR?
Also, are there any additional costs involved apart from buying this game in order to play this game on Oculus Rift?

Needs a half decent gaming pc to run this

If you have PC VR you should definitely play this, it's solid, it looks and plays good and it's very polished. The ending is very satisfying too for people who played the previous HL games.

Having said all that it's not the most ambitious game ever. If you compare with say HL2 (inc EP1+2) it has a small selection of weapons and enemy types, mostly small indoor environments, no vehicle sections, no big set piece fights, low enemy counts, slow character movement, and lots of repetitive looting - searching drawers and moving boxes around looking for ammo/resin. The gravity gloves are no replacement for the HL2 gravity gun either.

VR lifts the experience, and I think a lot of people played it during their VR honeymoon phase. Hopefully Valve can push the boundaries a bit further if they do another VR HL game.

The first game I got when I bought an Quest 2 and played wirelessly through steam. It literally destroyed all other VR games I'd played after because barely anything has matched it. So many jaw dropping moments and great atmosphere and jump scares.

Just started playing, is almost like real life. Had to get a new strap for my quest 2 since default is a bit rubbish
