Frequently Asked Questions
1. How is the screen on a Kindle different from a tablet?
Our Kindle devices are designed so you can read comfortably for hours. Kindle has a unique black and white glare-free display that reads like printed paper even in bright sunlight and enables weeks of battery life. With the display’s distinctive nature, slight shadows of previous text or images can sometimes remain visible on the screen. The display quickly refreshes occasionally to remove these shadows and ensure a high-quality optical experience.

2. Do I need to be a Kindle Unlimited member to read on a Kindle?
No. You do not need a Kindle Unlimited membership to read on a Kindle. All Kindle devices come with instant access to the world’s best eBook store. Kindle Stores worldwide offer millions of titles, including the latest best sellers.

3. How do I set up this Kindle?
You have the option to set up Kindle from the device by following its on-screen instructions, or with the Kindle app on your phone. When setting up using the phone, just open the Kindle app and enable Simple Setup under settings before you turn on your Kindle. If you opted in to linking Kindle to your Amazon account for simplified setup at purchase, it will already be registered to you.

Included in the box
Kindle, USB-C charging cable and Quick Start Guide.

Any suggestions for a reasonably priced ebook reader that isn't locked to Amazon?

Something that you could load your own content onto, straight out of the box (like Nook Simple Touch from a few years ago) (edited)

Kindle isn’t locked. I’ve uploaded my own ebooks and pdfs no problem from a pc

What's the difference between these and paper whites?
    NeverBagHolding's avatar
From what I remember, paper white is slightly bigger and has a backlight you can use at night. Not sure if it’s changed I’ve had my paper white for a few years now. I think PW is waterproof as well

Also PW has better battery. Like I can leave mine literally months without reading and it doesn’t drain (edited)

Good price. I got mine around at the beginning of the year when it was £65. They were also offering a trade in offer of 20% off and £15 for my old battered kindle so ended up paying £37.

It is brilliant. Use it way more than the old one. The battery lasts for weeks if not months. The backlight in dark mode is wonderful for reading in the dark without disturbing loved ones and so easy on the eyes I end up nodding off rather than finding it straining.

It’s very light and easy to just fling around and I like getting all the kindle first reads so there’s plenty of books to go with.

    Highly recommended.

I have a kindle paper white 7th gen. Works fine, battery isn’t as good as it once was.
Is it worth changing to this? Not too clued up about kindle devices. TIA
    SamRobertshaw's avatar
By 7th Gen - do you mean 7th Gen of Kindle devices? Just the Paperwhite is only 5 gens old now. If so you have the 2015 version - which would be £20 trade-in + 20% discount making it £60.

There seem to be quite a few improvements with the new Paperwhite over 2015 model:

    Larger 6.8-inch E Ink screen.
    Warm frontlight added.
    USB-C port.
Faster performance (turning pages, opening menus, etc).
    Waterproof (IPX8 rated).
More storage: 8GB or 32GB with the Signature Edition.
Adds support for 5.0 GHz WiFi networks.
Bluetooth to connect speakers or headphones to listen to audiobooks and VoiceView.
17 frontlight LEDs instead of 4.
    Flush front screen.
Better battery life (based on Amazon’s estimates).

To be honest it looks worth the upgrade IMO - if you have the new one for the same amount of time you'll effectively be paying less then £10 a year for it.

So I just bought the kids paper white with the 20% off and £20 trade in for my old paper white, came to £41. Granted my trade-in could go down to £5 once they receive it, it seems a way better deal for ad free
    ladapower's avatar
Do they give the 20% off in advance or first you have to send in the old kindle for inspection by which time the prime days promo likely ends?

Amazing price, I bought the paper white and I love it so much. So many books in 1 kindle and it looks just like paper

    no ads?
    hotsa's avatar
These are just on the lock-screen before you use the device (according to YouTube reviews). They are for books you may be interested in, some based on your reading history etc.

I was looking at the ad free one too but knowing the above, with a £10 saving, I think I may go with the 'with ads' option.

Thanks OP, ordered with trade in. A word to the wise, get Amazon CS to agree a refund of the approved 20% trade in of £12 to your card or gift voucher and leave a note on your account to that effect. When the trade in is approved, once they have the old Kindle, contact them with a reminder of that agreement to get your £12 back. The old Kindle valuation goes to your Gift Card balance anyway (£5 in my case).

I negotiated on Chat and saved it for reference. At first they said the 20% was only for future Kindle purchases not past ones. I pointed out that the 20% off was for this Prime Day Exclusive Deal and posted the link showing the full offer. Above arrangement was eventually arrived at as a 'special once off only' one. Only then did I order it at £59.99.

As it is for my wife I unticked the Link device box under the Add to Basket button, and will have to set it up manually to her account.

NB Don't forget TCB/Quidco cashback (as it qualifies as an Amazon device).
    grv999's avatar
I don’t understand what you’re getting at here. Why would you get a refund of the 20%? I just did a trade in too, the 20% was automatically applied at checkout as was £15 gift voucher for old device.

Any suggestions for a padded case for these? I'd prefer something that zips up - I want to be able to slip it in my daypack and not bother about what might come into contact with it.

I'm thinking update my Kindle 8th Gen as doesn't have backlight.
This or paperwhite kids? Any significant differences between the two worth the extra cost?
    YFL's avatar
Same question!! Already placed the order for the kids one. My daughter has to use it

Am I right in thinking that there is no need for anything better than this for e-reading? It's light, compact, easy to read.

Been waiting for one at decent price cheers

Is there a Kindle that allows me to highlight in colour? I got a paper white last year and as much as I love it, I wish I could highlight in colour as I do on the iPad. But the iPad screen is awfully bright at night, sadly, and much larger than the kindle.
    SamRobertshaw's avatar
Unfortunately not; the e-ink displays aren't able to display colour yet. The rumoured Kindle Colour will be your best bet (techradar.com/new…lor) but we've no word on release date yet.

Alternatively you could go for a Kindle Fire Tablet (HD 8 is the best IMO) which should be smaller than your iPad and you could highlight in colour - but again it isn't e-ink so loses the magic of the kindle in a way.

I said I had a device to trade in. But I only got charged £22.99?!

I don’t have a device so I am expecting £20 to be charged.

Trade in T&Cs allow Amazon to charge you for the trade in promotional discount if trade in is cancelled/unsatisfactory (source: kindle paperwhite kids thread) (edited)
  22. taiko.786's avatar
hi guys , if i have some epubs etc is it easy to view on this device ?
    SamRobertshaw's avatar
Absolutely - epub is the recommended format now for Kindles.

You can either email them to your Kindle via the bespoke Kindle email (in settings menu) - or preferably I use Calibre ebook library software on my PC; which either directly sends them via email or transfers via the USB cable.

I was going buy this with 20% trade off but can’t do on prime day deals. :-(
    Neostar's avatar
    What of course you can
  24. cbstar's avatar
    No I tried earlier
    SamRobertshaw's avatar
You've done it wrong by the looks of it.

If your Kindle powers on and isn't cracked; they'll give you a value - that will then be taken off the price when you commit to the trade. The extra 20% will also come off once your trade is confirmed.
  25. cbstar's avatar
No I havnt done it wrong, I got £10 gift card and 20% but wasn’t going on my account. So contacted customer service can get 20% off 84.99 full price not prime day deals.

If you Managed get prime day deals
Then did well. I was hoping get for £38 ish but sadly not.

My kindle is in fine condition just sent it off. (edited)
    ozodimal's avatar
Well, I've just received 20% off 84.99 (£17) on the Prime Day deal. I had CS put a note on my account that I was eligible for that before I went ahead with the £59.99 purchase, having registered the trade in. Today there was £5 already in my gift card account (for a keyboard Kindle traded in) so I asked CS on chat for the 20% trade in. They claimed it was only £12 (ie 20% of £59.99). I insisted that the trade in is based on the full RRP, not any particular deal. They disagreed but credited me with £17 gift card anyway, so £22 cashback altogether. I find you have to push your case somewhat with Amazon, but if it is reasonable they'll usually concede.
