A 10Gbps caddy and usb 3.1 3.2 port will give you results like this 50644233-XdNhR.jpg

a 20Gbps caddy if you have a usb 3.2 2x2 port will look like this

and a 40Gbps TB4 port with appropriate caddy will look like this

What's the best deal for an officially compatible 2TB SSD for PS5 with heat sink right now? I would appreciate if somebody could advise as my son complains he has to keep deleting games to install new ones. We had a 2TB external drive, which stopped working and had to be sent back for a replacement. WD asked us to pay for a return even though it was within the warranty period. They did pay for postage eventually, but still waiting for the replacement.

    westerndigital.com/en-…ssd £129.99 at WD £139.99 at Amazon

then there is this nonsense which is what you are asking about. amazon.co.uk/WD_…39Y £147.30 to £228 at Amazon* and £ 189.99 at Western Digital.

mostly *3rd party sellers. It keeps changing (edited)

is this better than the Samsung plus?
    HotDan's avatar
The 970EVO Plus? Yeah this is faster and has a much higher sustained speed.
  4. justabout72's avatar
Working for me. Do I need a heat sink

How do you use this in PS5, do you have to install it and is it difficult?
    MooBie's avatar
No its not difficult, follow the guide linked above and it will only take you a few minutes. (edited)

Guys, I tried the student thing and I wanted to let you know that you can't stack discounts. So the 1TB drive (SN850x) is £69.99 , but when I add the discount code for 15% it bumps it up to £71! It overrides the website discount! Bummer! Also the sn850x was £61.99 on amazon last week. I'm sure it'll drop back to that again at some stage so i'm waiting.

Speaking of drives, does anyone know what drive is best for OS installs? Thinking between firecuda 530 and solidigm P44 Pro atm. only want to go up to gen 4 as gen 5 prices are a joke lol
    beaversrus's avatar
WD site tells you at checkout
This promotion applies on the Original Price. Any product discount will be removed.

So that means the £69.99 price is halted and you are charged the £83.99 then a discount of 15% is taken off the £83.99 so £ 71.40 (edited)

May be PS5 “compatible” but the actual read speeds achieved are significantly below the recommended minimum and low read speeds have been known to cause issues with some games due to their need to access data quickly. If using this drive I’d recommend moving the game to the PS5 drive before playing and just using this for storage only. Or spend a bit more on the 850 or 850x.
    benfisher1991's avatar
Curious what issues? Everything i've seen, suggest slightly increased load times in some games. Games that utilise storage as part of the gameplay (Ratchet), seem unaffected. That's not to say a game won't come out in future that dramatically increases read requirements in gameplay.

Typical I just bought the 2tb yesterday lol on amazon (edited)
    justabout72's avatar
    send it back.
  11. redserpent's avatar
Nice price but at the end of the day its DRAM-less. Good if you dont mind your drive slowing to a crawl when writing loads to it.
    Deal_searcher's avatar
According to websites the cache is around 250 - 300gb so if below that in one go you should be all good
  12. insideman's avatar
    Thank you OP!
  13. zarg's avatar
I didn't even need to verify through a .edu email, it just allowed me to create an account and generate a code. Thanks OP.
  14. contom's avatar
Really good deal and thanks for sharing the edu email method. Wonder what other stuff you can get on discount via it..
  15. Adam's avatar
Great post I really do hope this gets hot. Your little hack too included!
  16. beaversrus's avatar
Shame the 770 has no Dram. I'll look to see if anything else on their site is on offer.
    plewis00's avatar
Is that true? I thought the Black series would have all the best technology including DRAM cache, seems like another bait and switch - using the name to sell a substandard product...
  17. pekoz1's avatar
    Good spot OP! Thanks

Bought one of these recently. Installed it in my PS5 and it's said it only have a speed of 3000MB/s. Hopefully it won't matter too much
    justabout72's avatar
I have the WDBlack SN850X 1TB in my PS5 it doesnt reach the advertised speed when installed.
I think the faster speeds may help with newer games coming out.
  21. bogdan_lm20's avatar
    NO Dram !
    sparc's avatar
    which one instead?
  22. greaterthan25characters's avatar
Managed to resist by convincing myself I need DRAM
  23. Odyssey's avatar
Take it this needs a heatsink for the PS5? If so which one?
  24. benfisher1991's avatar
    Damn, just picked up a 1TB 850x
  25. mrRaf's avatar
Do they have the 850x on the deal too?
    flickflakk's avatar
Yes just select the 2T 850 and follow instructions £113
  26. vulcanproject's avatar
Good drive, below official PS5 requirements for read speed but close enough it should not matter. Was the best budget DRAM less drive but has since been supplanted by the Netac NV 7000-t. That drive hits over 7,000MB/s and has a graphene heat spreader.

£88 on Amazon currently with the code. SSD tech is moving quickly.
    UnknownConcept's avatar
£66 with the 25% off voucher.

But worth noting the Netac is 1tb Vs the 2tb WD.
  27. Cavs's avatar
Any chance someone can link me a 4TB?

    SN850X

£269.99 which is likely to become dearer when you use the code.

The 770 appears to be only available up to 2TB capacities (edited)

I've had a PS5 since launch day, been meaning to buy one of these. See the headline, see the heat and ordered without reading the comments. I would've paid the £113 like someone else said if I knew the the benefit.
  34. Darklamb's avatar
Any suggestions for a suitable case, usb c. And would this then be suitable as a drive to do video editing plugged into a usb c enclosure
  35. beaversrus's avatar
Price is up now 1TB £49.99 with code £ 42.50

    2TB £97.99 £ 83.30 with code
