Description
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a classic representation of the impoverished and politically powerless underclass of British society in Edwardian England, ruthlessly exploited by the institutionalized corruption of their employers and the civic and religious authorities. Epic in scale, the novel charts the ruinous effects of the laissez-faire mercantilist ethics on the men, women, and children of the working classes, and through its emblematic characters, argues for a socialist politics as the only hope for a civilized and humane life for all. This Wordsworth edition includes an exclusive foreword by the late Tony Benn.

Fantastic book and relevant today with the gig economy and zero hours contracts.

Not relevant today as we have the welfare state. Campaign for UBI and leave employers alone.

Ask yourself 'how can this be delivered to your front door for just £1.00?'

    Are you exploiting someone?

    I'm hoping that it's a pricing glitch..

Isn't the book in the public domain?  If so, I don't think there'll be royalties to pay, so there's a saving.  Then it could be a job lot of unsold books that's been bought up for selling on as a loss-leader.  I'm assuming there's delivery to pay if someone's not a Prime member or on a Prime trial.  Or it could be sold as a loss-leader, just by us discussing it we're likely to visit Amazon so it may well have worked.  Or there is your option, someone could be getting exploited but I hope not.

Bought a few copies to give away and spread the word. Paul Weller stated it as his favourite book for any mods out there.

I read it many years ago and it changed the way I think. Blimey, it's just turned up, I'd forgotten how thick it is. 600 pages. (edited)

Overpriced at £1 in my view. Portrays most working class people as skiving whenever their employer's back is turned. My family would have been ashamed of most of the people described in the book. This is not what the labour movement was about.

Does it? I don't remember that from reading it

Some unique and thought provoking points in this book as well as the general left wing slant. The futility of doing pointless work, or not working at all. when there are an infinite number of things needing done isnt standard polemic .

It is a good book, but the whole premise of some 'lord of the manor' on a jolly pretending to be a labourer is a little far fetched, to say the least
