Pretty much bought recertified (in fact odd time have bought new from Amazon, couple of them have failed within a day and had to be returned!) never had an issue. Have about a dozen 4TB (with odd 5TB) All arrive looking like new - only difference I have ever noticed between new and recertified is the substantial saving!!!

I have a 4TB one of these. It is very slow.

There are so very many factors that can slow write access to a drive - so it may be worth going to a suitable forum where such matters as transfer rates are discussed. For example, robocopy can transfer files at a very different rate to drag and drop in file manager...

    Looks like yesterday’s listing
My Passport Ultra (Recertified) - 4TB External HDD
    has been reduced in price
£61.99 for the silver or gold casings
    £59.99 for the blue
Had seen above WD post - and a bit cheaper, but fancied the gold - now only a fiver(ish) more expensive than today’s posted model - so gone for gold!!

Always worried about buying recertified HDs given the fact that I would only use them as a backup device!

    How reliable are they?

"Do factory recertified drives offer the same reliability as new drives? Yes they do. In fact, factory recertified drives are in some respects more rigorously tested than prime drives." I haven't experienced any apparent difference but then, don't mistake individual anecdotal experience for facts. They won't survive transient energy (physical or electrical) any better and you might consider multiple backups, using different hardware and software and in different storage locations, as being a more reliable approach.
But then , "Your (ie my) response shows a real lack of knowledge." was a response to my earlier opinion - so you take your chances.

A lightning strike, just as I was backing up several years of work to my sole electronic backup device, rather convinced me of having lots of independent backups - I had paper copies of most of it. Scanning that, OCR and making it pretty again was not an experience that I would chose to repeat.

Just had my 2x 4tb refurbished drives arrive yesterday from WD (My Passport Ultra (Recertified) - 4TB External HDD).

I'm still at work so haven't tested them, but like previously, they have arrived looking like new.

I don't think I will ever buy HDD brand new ever again, seems like a waste of money. (edited)

Got a 4tb and 6tb recert from WD before. Both shucked and turned out to be WD Red EFRX which are CMR drives. Just to put that into perspective i paid around the £70 mark for the 6tb and a new 6tb Red Plus now costs £130 odd. The drive was also pretty much new with very little hours of power on time <20hrs.

I too will probably not bother with brand new drives when there is so much to be saved with these recerts. Just like a car, some engines run longer than others and even new cars breakdown
