Portability meets power
We partnered with AMD to create Steam Deck's custom APU, optimized for handheld gaming. It is a Zen 2 + RDNA 2 powerhouse, delivering more than enough performance to run the latest AAA games in a very efficient power envelope.
Your Steam Library, anywhere
Once you've logged into Steam Deck, your entire Steam Library shows up, just like any other PC. You'll also see the compatibility rating of each game, indicating the kind of experience you can expect when playing. You can dynamically filter any view in your library by compatibility rating if you're looking for specific sorts of experiences.
Control with comfort
The Steam Deck was built for extended play sessions—whether you're using thumbsticks or trackpads—with full-size controls positioned perfectly within your reach. The rear of the device is sculpted to comfortably fit a wide range of hand sizes.
There's a dock, too.
The Steam Deck™ Docking Station props up your Steam Deck while connecting to external displays, wired networking, USB peripherals, and power. Whether connecting your Steam Deck to your living room TV, setting up on your work desk, or charging on your night stand, the Dock is perfect for extending the places and ways you can use your Steam Deck.

sorted byI opted for a certified refurbished Steam Deck myself at around 270.
I got loads of cheap Steam sale games to add to my library, installed various emulators and loaded up all my old ROMs and it was a blast!
But the portability of it and battery became an issue with me until I ended up finding myself playing the XBSX and Switch on the sofa more and more.... before I even noticed I hadn't booted up my SD for over a month.
If it was my only console I reckon I would have kept it, I ended up selling it for roughly the same price I bought it for... brilliant bit of kit though just not for everyone.
Just my thoughts
Basically yes, well worth it for 350 pounds. You can upgrade it further down the line for much less than the more expensive model.
It has replaced my desktop gaming pc for over a year now, and I use it mostly on desktop mode due to its low power usage and pretty decent performance. I would compare it to a mid spec pc, only that pc would take at least double the power. For example a no gfx card, i5 gen 10 underperforms it for gaming at 30w, while a half decent graphics card takes at least 70w of power. While a steam deck hooked up to a monitor only seeps up 50w in total. Show your electricty provider the middle finger. Half of KW of power for 10 hours of gaming.
I upgraded to a 256gb SSD for 30 pounds on eBay. It has room for a 30gb Linux partion (I added a 256gb dedicated SD for Linux games), a 100 GB windows partion (with a 512gb SD for games) and another 100gb downloads partition. The downloads partition I use for windows downloads, since downloading anything big directly onto SD card will corrupt it after only a few hrs. So I download on SSD and move the stuff onto SD.
The interesting thing is that the steam deck plays off SD nearly as fast as off ssd. Once loaded, the game plays the same. Load times off SD I'd say are about 30% slower, but much faster than an HDD.
The thing is crazy optimized. It shouldn't pull off the performance it does. It runs dayz at 60fps mid gfx settings. It runs the likes of kingdom come and other open world games with no hitch.
Linux has 100% library compatibility once you installed glorious eggroll drivers. Google it.
It can also boot off SD cards, useful for small operating systems like batocera.
So yeah basically I use it as a desktop and I won't ever go back to bulky desktop. My next setup will have to be something down the same line. A newer generation processor from the same family, hopefully no gamepad or built in display.
I promise not to edit the post if you reply to it. It disappears. (edited)
The main issue Steam OS has is with the anticheat software integrated into online multiplayer games. Some of those will not work on the steamdeck unless you install Windows. (edited)
Heat added... Grudgingly...
It wouldn't surprise me if they release one with an OLED display before then though.
In the opinion of those of you who own a steam deck, is it better to buy the cheapest one, and upgrade to a SSD? Is it difficult to do? I've seen some videos that said it was easy, but it looked less easy than they said as they were showing how to do it (edited)
I'm interested in the Deckard having owned most headsets so far but unless the Deckard has some special tech to stop motion sickness and the general discomfort that comes with wearing the headset I think the Steam Deck will still have a place.
If you do get this one, I would highly recommend installing a slightly larger m.2 SSD. The proton installations and cache/shader files wipe out the 64gb fast. (edited)
I don't have any numbers re frame rate etc, but from what I can tell it handles it perfectly capably.
In terms of installation, I just searched for it in the Steam store and hit the button. Some games require tweaking etc but this did not.
Not played a Halo game online since Reach, I feel completely out of my depth lol (edited)
I use mine for the odd new Steam game, including my existing library.
I have also spent a few months on and off setting it up for emulation. I now have about 20 systems up to Gamecube, Dreamcast, with about 60-80 games each, all personally chosen and curated by myself. Everything is tagged properly, with boxart and screenshots etc.
It has been a fun little project, the SteamDeck truly is the ultimate emulation machine due to the versitilty. (edited)
Update: does appear to now be showing as in stock for both 64GB and 256GB versions with no reservation fee (at time of writing). 512GB is out of stock. (edited)
Great purchase, already loving it. Bit of a slab, didn't realise the size of it but used to it now.
however, despite the deck being incredible value for the money; this isn't a deal. it's just back in stock.
this model can* now appears on sale for £315 on Steam.

This one by any chance?
I also went for a 512gb sandisk extreme pro for the faster write and reads than the samsung, but it was a little more expensive at 42 (edited)

mainly a black heat shield and new fan are the most obvious changes. (edited)
Do customs open packages then re-tape or have I a customer return refurbished ?
Has anyone else noticed this on their box.
