If I had 4-5k to spend on a timepiece, it would not be seiko (edited)

Why is that? Grand Seiko are hailed as being better than Rolex by watch enthuisiasts.

Rather a Tudor or Rolex for this money imo
    bussty3's avatar
Tudor maybe, Rolex for £4600 ? No.

Worst part about GS is their fans trying to convince everyone they make good watches, they do have few good cheap models but at higher tier they are not even close to AP or Patek no matter how good craftmensip is.
    ezzer72's avatar
ALL of the experts agree that GS finishing is astonishing for the price, and is right up there with watches from a tier or two above.

No one apart from this forum would tell the difference between seiko and grand seiko. It’s a cold from me. People saying they are better watches than Rolex . Hilarious.

Tell us you know nothing about watches, without intending to.

Personlaly prefer Tag for lower mid. And AP for the higher end.
    jimbo001's avatar
Tag's customer service is awful and their watches are junk relative to Grand Seiko.
  7. andiron87's avatar
Not surprised they discounted it, not the prettiest. This shade of green sadly makes it look cheap.
    ezzer72's avatar
You need to see it in the flesh, you definitely wouldn't think it looked cheap.

This is quite a thick watch so may not sit well on smaller wrists, brilliant technology - using a mechanical movement to power a quartz crystal, so no battery and greater accuracy - and they do make Rolex cases look a touch crude (but that in itself may not be a negative, as many Rolex owners might find the GS is a bit too girly), GS depreciation is much higher than Rolex but that may or may not change in the future. I'd be looking at thirty percent off retail for any watch other than Rolex, never see any customers in the watch shops these days and there is an air of desperation.

Would much rather a Tudor at this price point!
    crazyfacedziggler's avatar
Subjective. For me, they are different enough watches that it would be easy to imagine owning both together. But if I were to choose technically, I would argue the GS offers a superior movement & will also likely have better finishing.

Plus, I can't wander down to Home Bargains frankly without bumping into someone with a BB58.

By all accounts, a high quality watch, but the reality is that GS just aren't as desirable (generally) as other luxury brands, particularly the Swiss luxury brands, so expect this to not hold it's value all that well.
If you like the look of this and don't see yourself ever selling it on, that's great.
Personally, I'd rather save a vast amount of money and buy the similar looking and also high quality Longines Hydroconquest.
    krispsnkrs's avatar
^For anyone looking for a piece that will hold value please don’t just think any Rolex will like some people do, you have to be very knowledgeable to judge what watches will hold value and very very few are in current climate (edited)

    4.6k Seiko....

    I couldn't do it.....

  12. ibz100's avatar
Is it true that these depreciate significantly compared to competitors in the same price range?
    Brad71081's avatar
Most do until you get to Rolex and above. These 100% will due to the seiko nane

I'd rather omega, but that's coz I'm a James bond fan
    ezzer72's avatar
That's fair enough, I own several of each, both great brands.

Do yourself a big favour though - buy a model that is actually worn by JB, rather than one of the silly ones with 007 logos all over it,

    I have the one from Skyfall;

I am not in the market however I believe the second hand is a smoother sweep than a rolex. HEAT
    ezzer72's avatar
It absolutely is - a lot is made of the Rolex 'sweep', with many people still thinking it's the way to check if it's authentic or not.

Basically a Rolex just has the standard tick of an automatic, these things really are buttery. (edited)

    3, 6, 5, 6 ?

I got a Casio with a keyboard much better value imo (edited)

Great watch, interesting movement, good price. Personally I love the olive green colour.

I have both a GS and a Rolex, and the finishing is better than my Rolex (no question). That doesn't necessarily make it a "better" watch as that's very subjective.

The biggest problem with owning a GS is constantly having to explain people what it is (if you're so inclined AND you really care about such things) whereas everyone knows what a Rolex is.

Disappointed to come to the comments and not find a “you could buy a car for that” comment.
    pat123's avatar
I hate to see a grown (please self identify to whatever you want) cry so here you go:

" I could've bought a car for the price of that oriental Timex".

    There you are.

If only they'd have chosen a shade of green from one of the other 1,999 types of Japanese moss...........

    Nice deal though.

They have a few on sale
  22. skinrush's avatar
My initial comment wasn't really from the perspective of making money.
From my own personal experience, the novelty of owning any watch wears off after a while, so I really have to want a watch to keep it beyond, say 6 months. So what I'm saying is that people should be careful spending circa £5K on a watch if it's a) not exactly what you want, and/or b) easy enough to sell on without haemorrhaging money.
  23. Pete_OnB's avatar
20% off... Clearly wasn't worth the original price.
    krispsnkrs's avatar
No one pays retail for a watch unless their doing it wrong or it’s a very rare/wanted watch. General discount at GS AD for me is 10-20%

I tried on a 250 grand watch in Harrod's once. It had so many diamonds in it that you couldn't actually tell the time! It was horrendous
  25. buffysmaw's avatar
they have much nicer dials than that. Keep saving and get an Omega.
