AuthorThey are 2 different devices, SteamDeck is better in ways because it has SteamOS, so all games are limited to steam and they have SteamDeck Optimised Games... but your capped to that ecosystem....
ASUS is a Windows device, so isn't limited, you can play EA, Ubisoft, Custom Games, Xbox Game Pass etc, but essentially a mini PC, so the optimisation is down to the user settings...
Battery same, performance ASUS better, optimisation SteamDeck better, game library ASUS better...

Hand cramps just looking at itAuthorI remember hating Switch for that as is was so thin and flat, but in honestly prefered it because it allowed a great set of custom grips to be put on, SteamDeck and this not sure how they are going to create grips

Just FYI, I put an order today and it shows free delivery in 3-5 business days. If I wanted to book a slot, I had to pay extra.
If warranty is done by Asus then it's a great deal. But if Currys has something to do with it, avoid.

Just spoke to Currys CS regarding my order as no tracking number received yet. They confirmed my order will be delivered tomorrow with a tracking number due to land in my mailbox later today, once the product has been passed over to the courier. Sounds positive so far.
Also seen some great write-ups this morning on reddit from our friends across the pond who have already received their units. Cant wait for mine. Not expired, it's just Currys awful website. Stick with and it'll work eventually, it's happening on other products too.
Just received an email from Curry's. My Ally protective case has been delayed and they will receive it on the 16th instead. As a result they have provided a refund of £5 as a gesture. I ordered the case seperately, so not sure if this is an indication the Ally itself will also be delayed? Let's see...
Also got a call from Currys regarding my order. There are case stock issues apparently they wanted to inform me about. If both console and case were ordered at the same time, they'll be delivered on the 16th. I had the option to cancel the case, then the console would still be delivered on the 12th. And i'd have to order the case again when/if it comes back into stock. I said i'll wait until the 16th, and also got a fiver as a gesture (edited)
If anyone thinks this is a bargain / great value, please seriously reconsider how much you have been conditioned with pricing psychology. A PS5 digital edition is £360 RRP and that contains an SOC more powerful and more expensive to manufacture than the one in the ROG Ally. it also comes with 825GB SSD whereas the ally only comes with 512GB - and that was back in Nov 2020! SSDs are disgustingly cheap now. Even the Steam Deck isn’t great value if you compare it to a PS5. And before anyone comes at me with “but these handhelds have screens and batteries” Low-tier LCD screens and batteries cost very little when you’re buying at the scale that Valve and ASUS are. The ROG is objectively terrible value at almost twice the cost of a PS5, yet most people seem to think its a bargain. I’m actually baffled. I would wait until theres an emudeck equivalent. Steam deck is amazing and my favourite handheld of all time.if you're happy to buy software, then Launchbox will do what you ask. If you want a free option, then there's RetroBat, but it's not my favourite and it can't launch PC games

But yeah, on full power (30W) and 120Hz it's likely not gonna last much more than 1hr on battery.

Yeah, so I canceled my Pre-Order to re-order this with the discount. When did you order?- I think the best thing for me about this device is how efficient and quiet it is according to the reviews. I really really hate fan noise. It's why I have a Mac as my main gaming machine.

These look ok, but the lack of touchpads and the decks ergonomics and Valves phenomenal support place the deck over this still. Although if it does make the decision a lot harder as the performance is very good on these new chips.
This form factor is really great, and honestly having a spare PC to have as a dedicate linux machine has been really nice honestly. The deck also works great in desktop mode, perfect for using at work and popped straight up when used with my dock and the switch to desktop is dead easy.
We're entering gaming laptop territory in terms of price, a lot better performing machines out there for this price in my opinion, some with better batteries. Steam Deck makes sense because it's £300, a little sceptical about this. I'd pick one up if they did a black one and price is around £500. Hope it does well though to help the handheld PC market.
Well, that's not entirely true. The base Steam Deck is £350 but it only 64GB storage which is widely considered to be NotEnough™.
I couldn't tell you if there's a £700 gaming laptop out there but I personally wouldn't compare the two - the Ally is a portable handheld device. If I'm chilling in bed I don't want to crack out a hunking great laptop. YMMV ofc.
