I've just ordered the Samsung 870 EVO. is this any better? (edited)

Not really, both will perform pretty much the same so go with whatever is cheaper.

Excellent drives these. Had one connected to my Xbox series x for over a year now and never had an issue regarding transfer speeds or efficiency

Novice question - I have a 1TB HDD external drive, what benefits are there to upgrading to SSD as external storage still?

SSD are much faster than HDD also safer as they are less likely to break down due to non moving parts I believe.

Have some of these myself, I tried a Samsung QVO and would never use/recomend a QVO over these. The QVO slows down to just a write speed of 70Mb yes slower than a spimming hard drive when installing some of the newer bigger games. The only thing with these drives getting cheaper is that I'm not uninstalliong games I'm just adding drives. (edited)

I have Samsung 860 pro with 3rd gen intel processor on old Sony Vaio Laptop, will it improve the performance? Thanks

Yes but not by a lot, as its cpu bottleneck and ram

These have been my 'go to' SATA drives with DRAM for a long time.
    Proven to be extremely reliable.
