2 monitors connected to laptop

Hi guys!

Need to have 2 monitors connected to my laptop for work. HDMI Splitter I think will 'not do the trick', one of the screens will not be 'active' will need to jump all the time to settings to change to it or am I wrong? They need to be both 'active' because will be in use all the time. Thank you for advice., ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘Œ

It depends on the laptop. If it has a usb c port and supports thunderbolt 3 you might want to consider a proper usb c dock which will have a great selection of ports (usb c , usb A, aux, multiple hdmi)

Does your laptop have an HDMI port built in? If so, just get a USB hub with HDMI port so then you'll have one monitor going through the hub and one through the built in HDMI. This is assuming the laptop can support multiple monitors of course. (edited)

Do you know the exact model of the laptop?

If you do .... you'll probably get more targeted advice.

For example on a Dell you'll probably have a 6 or 7 digit Service tag on the underside that you (or we) can lookup the exact model (as it was leaving the Dell factory) which would help you a lot.

I have a Dell Latitude 7420 and have two Dell P2720DC 27" monitors hooked up to it.

The first monitor connects to the laptop via a USB C cable that powers the laptop too. The second, is connected to the first monitor via a Display port cable.

As others have already said, it will depend on your laptop, but also the monitors you want to use.

HDMI doesn't have the ability to independently control multiple screens so what gets sold as a 'splitter' is typically just a screen duplicator so all the screens connected to the HDMI port would show the same thing.

Assuming your work is requiring this to have multiple programs open at once rather than to be able to see the screen from different angles then that's no good.

While there are ways around it and devices that present multiple screens as one large screens it's best to check if your laptop has any other video outputs as all the others common on newer laptops will handle multiple independent screens natively, resulting in less compromises than trying to use HDMI.
