Best waterproof walking jacket

Hiya,

Can anyone recommend a good brand and or 3-in-1 type waterproof jacket?

I've noticed everyone wearing The North Face and apparently Berghaus has gone downhill.

I bought a Mountain Warehouse jacket a few years ago for around £110 and it didn't take long for the zips to break, etc.

Thanks!

Make sure it's gore-tex and buy one you like. If it's gore-tex, brand won't matter. (edited)

There are 2 sides to it, I had a Gore-Tax North face jacket which worked great until the DWR coating vanished and I tried restoring it but no luck, but lucky Gore-Tex did help with warranty and offered me a full refund after they examined my jacket.

Also: Gore-Tex does help with breathability but only by a bit, but it goes away if the jacket gets wet and the moisture can't leave.

North Face is what the cool kids wear for sure.
Mountain warehouse is budget and I wouldn't rely on it for anything more than a brief shower.

Rab, Montaine are great if they have pertex/goretex membranes. My no. 1 has to be mountain equipment. So breathable and a great fit. Had it years.

Good waterproofs are worth spending money on imo

    Keela Munro - job done!

Alternatively, look for a good condition, used Berghaus Mera Peak.

Wash with Nikwax Tech Wash and reproof with Nikwax TX Direct and you'll be good to go! (edited)

I've had a Berghaus gore-tex jacket for a few years and it's the best waterproof coat I've had (edited)

What's the sizing like? I've spotted one which says "Our model is 6'1'' with a 40'' chest and wears a size small". I'm 5' 4" with a 34" waist - what are your thoughts?

I don't think you can go far wrong with paramo-clothing.com/en-gb/

If you are looking for more mainstream brands then I've been happy with Montane and RAB in the past

If you actually plan on walking, and I don't just mean in town, then get a shell with pit zips. Go for a dedicated hardshell, forget insulation completely and go for a proper mid layer for that, but if you're warm inside that moisture has to go somewhere and no matter how breathable they say they are nothing beats pit zips for getting rid of excess.

Proper mid-layer being a fleece of some kind? MandM doing some deals for fleeces but not sure what's good or not though
