55” TV Search

Hi. We’re looking to purchase a 55” TV in the region of £800 and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations? Through a health plan I have, I can get a Samsung 2023 55” Q80C QLED 4K HDR Smart TV for £662 or, if I wait until they are back in stock, I can get a Samsung 2023 55” QN88C Neo QLED 4K HDR Smart TV for £799 or the 2023 55” QN85C Neo QLED 4K HDR Smart TV for £809.

Bearing in mind the TV is to be wall mounted and that we would only be using it for general viewing, including films and sports, would any of these be recommended and, if so, is it worth waiting for the Neos? What advantage do they have over the QLED?

Or, are there other TVs you’d recommend over these?

Thanks.

Neo QLED is just what Samsung calls their mini LEDs and they are up there with the best. From the TVs I've seen mini LED is really a step up over QLED.

The advantage is they have better contrast, deeper blacks and less blooming. They are usually the brightest TVs so work well if using them in a bright room.

The prices you can get on them are great if possible. If you can't get them prices then realistically you would have to go to a more budget brand for mini LED at £800 (e.g. TCL/Hisense) or a more premium full array QLED (e.g. Sony). Depends on budget and which picture you prefer at that point. (edited)

Mini led is the back light behind the LCD panel. It replaces older bigger leds. It's not a replacement for qled. Which is a light filter to enhance the colours you see. ALL mini led TVs have Qled filters.

TV Technology has moved on a lot over the last few years. Don't buy Samsungs standard qled range. Especially anything above about 50-55 as they are almost all edge lit, with LEDs only at the very top and bottom edge of the screen.

That goes for any edge lit TV. You definitely want direct led minimum, or preferably full array or Mini led on a new modern TV. Otherwise it won't be able to do proper dimming or go bright enough for decent HDR, and could even look dim/dark on certain parts of the screen.

The neo qled range is better as they are mini led with full array local dimming.

Having just had a hisense fail within 2 years (they sorted very quickly and got full refund) i would definitely get a extended warranty either paid or free.
