Which console is best for single player games?

Been out of the loop of gaming for a while due to life interfering, but have a scheduled Op in January which will require around 4 months of recovery, so thought about getting in some gaming to while away the time.

Like single player immersive games ideally with a decent storyline not interested in online. Last game I played was Red Dead on PS4 and enjoyed that.

Any recommendations for consoles and games?

I'd say get a PS5 for single player immersive games, they have better exclusives than Xbox in all honesty, plus you have a wealth of 3rd party games.

I'd recommend The Last Of Us Part 1 and 2, great stories and very immersive.

I suggest a handheld console, you can pick up an LCD Steam Deck on the cheap or go for the new OLED version. Most of the must play single player PS games are available on steam and you also access to a larger library of PC games.

You're just going to get bias results with this question I'm afraid. I would personally find out what games you want to play first and then buy whichever console you prefer the feel of the controller.

I suspected it might inspire the age old console vs console thing. I just really wanted some up to date advice on good single player games, as to an outsider so many seem to focus on the online multiplayer market.

Thanks for the suggestions all, I can see myself enjoying being laid up.

Will your recovery involve being in front of a TV for the required amount of time? I'd be tempted to keep things flexible and go for a portable device, so that would either be Switch or Steam Deck. Switch has some great single player games that could keep you busy, but Steam Decks extra cost is offset by the huge library of current and retro games.

But as mentioned above it's a very biased view. I'd put a Steam deck above a PS5 or Xbox X.

    I'd easily choose a PS5...

    Spider-Man Remastered.
    Miles Morales.
    Spider-Man 2.
    Uncharted 1-4 and Lost Legacy.
    God Of War (2018)
    God Of War Ragnarok.
    Gran Turismo 7.
    Returnal.
    Ratchet And Clank Rift Apart.
    Days Gone.
    Astros Playroom.
The Last Of Us 1 and 2.
    Ghost Of Tsushima Directors Cut.

Plus the Dualsense is a magical controller. (edited)

Don't discount Nintendo! Fantastic games - Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, Donkey Kong Country, Luigi's Mansion, Fire Emblem, Metroid, Xenoblade, Astral Chain, Bayonetta, Tears of the Kingdom, etc.

Ring Fit Adventure is a great game for physical activity

PS5 over PS4 if you've had or played on the PS4 before. Some games that I would personally recommend are Red Dead Redemption 2 which is even better than the first one, Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, Sniper Elite 4, Batman Arkham Collection, GTA, Last of Us, Uncharted Collection, God of War. I say a Playstation 5

    The Last of US
    Spiderman
    Horizon FW
    Ghost of Tsushima
    Uncharted
    God Of War
    FF16
    FF 7 remake

    Tales of Arise (non exclusive)
    Alan Wake (non exclusive)
    BG 3 (non exclusive)

These will last you for months! lol

But if you have a PC...look into Gamepass (edited)

    Yeah, go PS5. If you've played PS4 it's a no brainer.
As an owner of both PS5 and Xbox Series X the best single player experiences have all been on the PS5.

If you have follow up appointments after your OP , Then if you can afford it after getting say a PS5 , then get a switch aswell . You can take the switch with you and it will help with the boredom sitting about .

Of all the things that could be debated between PS5 and Series X, quality of single player experiences isn't really of them it's PS5's biggest strength.

But don't just take my word for it! Critically acclaimed (Metascore 85+) primarily single-player releases this gen that you can't play on any rival console:

    Baldur's Gate 3
    Death Stranding: Director's Cut
    Demon's Souls
    Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
    Final Fantasy XVI
    Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut
    God of War: Ragnarok
    Gran Turismo 7
    Horizon Forbidden West
The Last of Us Part I
    The Nioh Collection
    Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
    Returnal
    Spider-Man: Miles Morales
    Spider-Man 2
    Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection

Plus an equivalent list at least twice as long of PS4 games, all backwards compatible.

Huge hitters like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Wolverine are also on the way. Shout for Switch too though - like Sony, Nintendo are also known for the quality of their exclusives. (edited)

Odd that most say a ps5 over a ps4 then list games that came out on the ps4.....

Are there still no decent exclusive new games on the ps5? Sold my ps4 pro 2.5 years ago for £320 so tempted to buy one again now they're about £100 (edited)

None of these critically acclaimed titles are on PS4 (or Xbox):

    Baldur's Gate 3
    Demon's Souls
    Final Fantasy XVI
The Last of Us Part I
    Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
    Returnal
    Spider-Man 2 (edited)

I would recommend the Xbox, either last gen or this gen - for the simple reason that they support a lot more of the game library from previous console versions. This is significant for single player games as a lot of newer releases lean towards online multiplayer or co-op modes. Bear in mind that a lot of games require an internet connection to play - even the single player campaigns!

FWIW - my son played Ghost Of Tsushima Directors Cut, The Last Of Us 1 and 2 & Gods of war on the PS4 without an online subscription. All enjoyable (albeit brief for him, Ghost Of Tsushima being his fav) single player games. (edited)

Not sure about elsewhere but neither of these are true of PS5.
