Amazon returns postage

Just tried to return an item to a third party bought via Amazon and noticed that it was going to charge me for the postage via Royal Mail. This was an incorrect item that was ordered. Any way of avoiding this change.?

I'm pretty sure that unless it's faulty or they sent the wrong item, then the onus is on you to pay return postage.

Usually asks for the reason you are returning. If it's just because you don't like it, they usually charge. If it's because it's faulty or the wrong item, then it's usually free (sometimes they even refund and tell you keep it). That's how it works with Amazon directly, not sure about sellers?

It's the wrong item hence I have to return. It's costing the same amount to return as the item I bought.

Have you tried asking amazon customer service?

Not yet but that's probably my next step.

    Simple, phone Amazon.
    Rather request a call back.

This - will be sorted in minutes rather than replying to posts here. They might not even want the item back if it's low value

Return costs resulting from customer error are typically funded by customer,
but particularly arrogant customers can normally find a
    not as described
    reason to reject.

This can be as simple as
listing colour states beige but item received was unacceptable cream colour
    or more colourful (sic):
    dimensions stated as 100 x 100 x 100mm but item received is oversize at 100 x 100 x 101mm
    similarly:
weight stated as 250g but item received is 249g so obviously lacking material quality / robustness

The item I ordered was an old oven bulb. The photos looked like the correct one but once it arrived it didn't fit. I need a bigger size.

You're responsible for return carriage then unless you talk to an Amazon agent who may provide a free postage label, or you lie about the return reason. I'd encourage you not to do the latter, suck it up, or just contact Amazon!
