Need help to buy a guitar for my 9 year old

My younger one is interested in learning guitar so I want to buy a good starter one for him but I know absolutely nothing about musical instruments. I will highly appreciate if nice folks on hukd could suggest some options.

I would like to get something good at a reasonable price that could keep him interested in learning.

A squire affinity would be a good starting point. Anything cheaper won’t be very good and will put him off learning as it just won’t sound very good. A suggestion would be to get it professionally set up in the store (edited)

my first one was an acoustic, from Argos I believe.
you might get an idea of what guitar, from the music he listens to

Robert Dyas has got a a sale on including various guitars, for example robertdyas.co.uk/3rd…ral
I have no idea if they are good or bad, just came across them while looking for something else.

Maybe worth adding to your post what kind of guitar. Acoustic? Bass? Electric? What your Budget is? (edited)

No idea which one would be a good starting point for a 9 year old who has never tried a guitar before. I would like to start with a good basic one and would be happy to buy a more expensive one if he stays interested.

After discussing it with my boy, he would like an electric guitar because it looks 'cool'. My budget is ideally within £150 but I can stretch a bit more if it is hard to get anything half decent within that range. I feel completely lost so any help would be highly appreciated.

Will he be learning on his own or at school? Because school is usually acoustic.

Look on Facebook marketplace for a Yamaha Pacifica. Loads of examples usually about £70 to £100. These are extremely well made guitars that can actually last a lifetime. It will certainly need new strings, so look on Amazon for Ernie ball 42-9 strings. I think about £8 a pack. These need replacing about every 6 months as they eventually corrode from playing. You'll need a practice amplifier as well, these are usually made by Peavey, Fender, Roland or Marshall and should be around £30-£70 second hand. If your child gets in a band with their friends it will keep the enthusiasm up! (edited)

robertdyas.co.uk/3rd…BwE Something like that would start them off handy enough and then as they hopefully develop a greater interest that's the time to invest more money . Plenty to give them a good starting point
