IMO the translation on this one is terrible. I would recommend downloading the free one available on Project Gutenberg. It’s translated by Alexander Pope (famous English poet) and includes illustrations as well as footnotes.

Gutenberg is a good resource for most things out of copyright.

What a slog... I wouldn't read it for enjoyment personally, but each to their own. The Odyssey however, was a cracking read. IMHO of course.

I mostly agree - it's still more readable than some other contemporary works, but can be tiring unless you enjoy the descriptions of gore etc. Those are quite repetitive too, but that's due to the fact that it had to be memorised by bards, hence some descriptions had to be repeated to make it easier.

But then, you read the Odyssey and it's amazing. It's even more amazing when you realise it was written 2800+ years ago, yet the narrative structure (non-linear with flashbacks, parallel stories etc) is so modern it makes anything else produced around that time seem like it was written by children in comparison. I do have the advantage of being able to read the original (with some help of a side translation, I can only read up to 3rd cent. BC Greek without help), which is in a beautifully crafter dense language, otherwise you are quite dependent on the competence of the translator.

For anyone who's read the Iliad though, I strongly suggest they read Dan Simmon's Ilium scifi novel. It's a great novel (along with its conclusion "Olympos") anyway, but if you've read the Iliad there's extra "reward".

Not a great translation. Doesn't even use the Greek names for some of the characters e.g. Jove, Minerva, Ulysses etc.

That's weird, does it mean that the translator worked off a Latin translation instead of the original, so it's a translation of a translation?

Just wondering if anyone knows if it's free for non prime members as well?
    hamsterboy's avatar
Try it? (It was for me and I don't have prime)

For those talking about the version on project Gutenberg can you still read it on the kindle app on an iPad? I downloaded the kindle version from the Gutenberg site but says incompatible when I try to open using the iPad kindle app.

Good question. Previously I had to download a third-party reader, I chose Aquile Reader which is very good (& free!) ... but it's for Android.
