sorted byBut then, you read the Odyssey and it's amazing. It's even more amazing when you realise it was written 2800+ years ago, yet the narrative structure (non-linear with flashbacks, parallel stories etc) is so modern it makes anything else produced around that time seem like it was written by children in comparison. I do have the advantage of being able to read the original (with some help of a side translation, I can only read up to 3rd cent. BC Greek without help), which is in a beautifully crafter dense language, otherwise you are quite dependent on the competence of the translator.
For anyone who's read the Iliad though, I strongly suggest they read Dan Simmon's Ilium scifi novel. It's a great novel (along with its conclusion "Olympos") anyway, but if you've read the Iliad there's extra "reward".
