Purchased one of these on the same deal a few months ago, and can recommend it. Works perfectly with my work Dell laptop and my i5 MacBook Air.

I had the same issue and very frustrating.
I recommend StarTech - 107B-USB-HDMI for Mac and Windows. You will need to download their driver as well. It works with M1.

    Mine arrived today,

Impressed with the dock, seems very well built and an excellent pairing with our Macbook Air M2

Certainly cant knock it at the price, the extra USB C lead thrown in for free is a load of junk and needs to go in the bin, dont know why they bothered. But the unit is brilliant value

    Sits nicely under the monitor

Does this have a power on/off button or switch?
    pjn's avatar
    No power switch, unfortunately.

I bought one from the old deal only a few days ago. Don't think the price ever changed.
    It's a weighty little thing.

    Ok

I have a dock already so it's not a requirement, just a query, would these sorts of things work with the Steam Deck? I'm presuming they would given it's "just a handheld pc" but I thought you guys would be better placed to confirm
    warlockuk's avatar
I'll check as I have this particular dock...

...I can confirm that if you have USB keyboards and use the HDMI all of that works - but if you use thunderbolt to get a second monitor (as I do) then that monitor won't work with steamdeck.

I got this in the previous deal and it barely worked 2 days before the keyboard and mouse inputs stopped functioning. It was just a surface pro 9 with 1 display. Even when it did work it took 20 seconds for the display to appear after connecting.

Kensington said each thing needed to be connected in a certain order every time to work, but that never helped.

Seems to be a few similar experiences mentioned online.

Edit2: ARGHHHHHH nope the keyboard lag issue is back

Edit1: by coincidence my employer rolled out the Win10 22H2 update yesterday and now the issues seem to have gone. Leaving my post below though.

    -
I also had issues but not qute that bad. E.g. my keyboard had maddening intermittment lag only on work laptop (Thinkpad, windows). Plugging it in the front USB port fixed that somehow. I still have other issues e.g. webcam (C920) microphone but can't be bothered sending it back.
It works fine with my personal laptop.

Shame as I think it would be amazing if it worked as I hoped. I think it looks good too. (edited)

    Is the power supply included?
    pjn's avatar
Yes, as is a Thunderbolt cable

Got this last time it was this price, excellent piece of kit, works flawlessly.
  9. iLikeDiscount's avatar
Is it fanless like the Caldigit?
    hamsterboy's avatar
Yes. It's very substantial and weighty. Like a big ass heatsink.

Apologies if this has been asked but does anyone know if this would work on a non-thunderbolt laptop via USB-c. From what I can see it can still support one screen but wanted to see if anyone knows more. I've had bad past experiences with docking stations where it says 4k resolution but in reality is impossible to get it

Lenovo do a USBC dock that is often on sale and featured here. It's what I use for my AMD laptop plus two monitors.

Anyon tried this under linus? Does is working fine with debian 12?
    farmphdbank's avatar
Fine with Ubuntu 23.10 on 10th gen i7 HP Envy.

I have an iMac 27 5k screen 2015. Could I use this dock with my windows laptop to utilise the large screen on my iMac? Really appreciate someone with the experience and knowledge to feedback.
    weiran's avatar
    Nope
  13. weiran's avatar
Got this last time. Works just as well as the other Thunderbolt docks but for a fraction of the price. My only complaint is you can occasional hear interference through the headphone jack.
  14. Just-Blondie's avatar
    Why would I need this?
    bobthewibble's avatar
To plug a laptop into a desk setup, monitors, keyboard, etc with minimal extra connections needed. I use similar when I bring my laptop home from work.

What’s the advantage of this over one of those USB C dongles you can buy from the likes of UGREEN / Anker? Those are smaller format. Do they achieve the same thing?
  16. Hustler1337's avatar
Does this have a built-in charger so it can directly power my Macbook via USB-C and therefore not require the Macbook charger to feed the docking station power? Thanks
    Stageshoot's avatar
Yes it does it will power your Macbook as you use the dock, The dock has its own power supply that powers the dock chargers your macbook via USB C etc (edited)
  17. warlockuk's avatar
This is fantastic with my work computers; it supplies > 90w (it has its own power brick) via USB-C.
I have an ultrawide connected via HDMI and a regular 1440p 16:9 monitor connected via a thunderbolt to HDMI cable. Works absolutely flawlessly in that configuration for me.
    harry66's avatar
I bought one last time it was on offer.
It was very sensitive to interference, it had to be plugged directly into a wall socket - using an extension caused weird problems e.g. ethernet not working.
Also, I was using with 2 screens and quite often after the screens went to sleep, the dock stopped detecting one until the dock power cable was removed and reinserted.
I persevered for 3 weeks, before returning it for a refund.
Ordered a 2nd hand Lenovo dock for a similar price and it has been working flawlessly

this seems to be a cut down version of the iVANKY FusionDock Max 1
only problem is it retails for over £350+
    jederer's avatar
Yes that is a minor disadvantage

Does anyone know how to disable the 1 GB storage that containing the network card driver? It's pretty annoying having it there in the file manager. (edited)
    ShaolinPhunk's avatar
Right click on the start menu button in Windows. Select drive management. Right click the drive you want to change. Select change drive letter or path. Remove the drive letter. You will get one or two warnings that the drive letter may be needed or in use. Click yes to these and it may be necessary to complete a restart for it to be gone from File Explorer.

If you want to make further changes there, be careful unless it's a freshly installed system, as file paths and drive letters may be set-up, but if you've never used that drive, you should be fine. I use this management console to change drives and partitions (subdivisions of drives) to start with relevant letters. So, user files and folders will end up on U drive, videos on V drive, etc.

Is there a way to use this as a pc without the laptop being on constant charge whilst in use for a number of hours a day? I got this to use it as a PC which works very well but with having a brand new laptop hooked up to it via a usb-c scared of degrading my battery health as it is constantly charging whilst in use. Is there a way to use it whilst laptop not on charge (edited)

I also bought this last time and it's worked a dream. I've been using it with an i9 Macbook 16Inch and it's great. At this price it's a fraction of the other docks.

I'm struggling to charge my Surface Pro 8 with the dock - The battery is draining rapidly while it's saying its charging.

Ignore me - Had the laptop plugged into the downstream port. (edited)

Any idea on compatibility for this? Specifically an HP Zbook Studio G7
    farmphdbank's avatar
Works great with my HP Envy (i7 10th gen, running Ubuntu) but I've had minor annoyances with work ThinkPad.
E.g. webcam is sometimes not detected. Sometimes it is detected but microphone doesn't work.

Might only be drivers but unfortunately my work thinkpad is locked down and they are slow to roll out updates
  28. malachi's avatar
Thanks, might get this for my MB Air M1

For dual display, get the StarTech 107B-USB-HDMI due to the M1 chip.

What charger does it use? Anyone know the connector size?
I'm always afraid with this kind of brands that if the charger will die it will be a problem to find a spare one.
With Dell, Lenovo, Hp you just go ebay and buy one for £20 and problem solved. What about kensington?

How would one use this? Plug monitor, lan and usb devices into it and then a single powered cable to laptop? Any other use cases?

I have a MacBook Air plugged into usbc monitor which charges it and acts as usb hub. Also a separate Mac mini which already has a lot of ports. Will this help me in any way?
