I need a new desktop, interested in your suggestions. It's for my elderly mother but want a system that will last a few years. Is graphics resolution important for her poor eyesight if we need to zoom?

Could have a nice ryzen pc with a decent graphics card for this price

I like it BUT at 45w CPU still too warm ... def the right idea imo (laptop CPU in a desktop case). Not sure you couldnt put this together for about the same or less tho

I got the MX one for the missus as tge BX don't go big enough... At least not where I bought from

Only major difference between MX and BX is power loss protection and write endurance rating. Both drives saturate sata port and crucial slightly tweak firmware to give MX a slight speed advantage.

I used Minitool Partition Wizard which was pretty fuss free. Cloned the disc and swapped them over. It's a shame I had to faff with downloading and installing the Acronis tool but all good in the end. Totally transformed a couple of old Lenovo X230's. Happy boy and wife and a happy wallet for me (y)

If you haven't tried it already I think macrium reflect does a good job and I've had no issues with it in the past :)

I've tried the BX and MX SSDs... Very pleased with them both however I could not get the Crucial Acronis tool to recognise the drive as a crucial drive so I had to paddle my own canoe with free utilities. Heat for the price

better value yes, but this is a usb powered 2.5" drive & enclosure and that is a mains powered 3.5" drive & enclosure, so they arent really that comparable.

£15/Tb is my new buy in, this is over £19. The deal for the 8Tb yesterday was the one to go for.

In normal days, the price is 74-78. Suddenly yesterday the price jump to 109. And with the discount it would be 78 also. Hummmm

It's not NVme but Sata, so, yes speed similar to Sata. :)

The description shows that it is a SATA drive.

Pretty slow nvme drive, basically performs the same as it's SATA counterpart.

Ordered thanks OP - that shaves a bit more of my total build cost! next cheapest I could find was CCL which was £55.99. This and the corsair TTX550 Gold for £54 posted earlier has meant i've got a decent PSU and SSD for £100. Cheers

Was ready to bite but as it's ebuyer I'll give it a miss. Not worth the grief.

I bought a pair of 500GB models for SSD cache on my NAS box. The cache kept failing, as one of the drives repeatedly stopped working. I started an RMA process, and WD's response was that sometimes these drives don't report themselves correctly, causing the problem, but they're not actually broken. If they're not fit for purpose, then they're useless to me, but the argument continues. I'm a big fan of WD, but this is shaping up to be the worst experience I've had with them.

Do you mind me asking why as bought one at same time and mine is working ok

I bought a couple of these in April, and I'm currently arguing with WD over an RMA request.

Just buy Silicon Power A80 512GB NVMe drive. Which is twice faster than this and comes with DRAM cache. It's available @ Amazon for £57. Silicon Power A80/Corsair MP510/Seagate Firecuda/Sabrent NVMe drives are actually same drive based on Silicon Motion NVMe reference SSD.

2x is a bit naff and it's dramless which means random reads are about the same as a SATA SSD.

Use code PURE20 High-Speed NVME PCIe Gen3 M.2 Interface High Density 3D TLC Nand 3,4800MB/s Seq. Read 3,000MB/s Seq. Write 5 Year Warranty

Very close in performance, but way ahead on endurance 1700 TBW versus 600 TBW. At five years of constant usage, that would be 900+ GB writes per day.

Some nice data on this drive here in the anandtech review

You're welcome. Note that the Keple gizmo includes the ESSENTIAL PD pass thru capability. So at home it's 1: Huawei D14 supplied plug into ring main, 2: Huawei D14 supplied non-integrated USBC cable >>>>> 3. USBC connection on Kepple gizmo 4. Short Integrated Keple gizmo USBC cable >>>>>> 5. Huawei D14 Left Hand side power input. 6. LAN cable from Powerline into Keple gizmo RJ-45 port For the pub, etc I bought a longer 3 metre version of 2. USBC - USBC, so 1: plugged into Pub ring main 3 metre cable from 1 to 5.

Thanks for this comment! I was just wondering if the USBC would accept ethernet connections incase of emergency and looks like I don't have to look anymore! Funny how it even draws parallel to the macbooks in needing extra docks for connectivity XD

Got one of these on their last £50 cash back offer + -£10 First order. Great little laptop; very portable, non plastic look for those of you into style; no fan issues for me v.g screen Very little in your face bloatware. Love the automatic driver update utility. My only criticism: very short on connectivity. No SD card reader, no RJ-45, Only 1 X USB 3.1; 1 X USB 2,0; Phone jack. Bought this to improve connectivity Very quick. My free Malware Bytes scan just took just 42 seconds after 6 months of of tedious Windows maintenance updates and new features. Recommend the D14

Had seen this before hence why I was asking quesrions. Ordered - thanks. Should be a whole lot better than my Acer travelmate running XP (lol) (lol) (lol)

Synology DS218+ 2 Bay Desktop NAS Enclosure the best price I have seen. I bought one

You can’t just switch the hard drives, from memory I had to go into one of the synology set up menus with both nas connected to the network and select move drive from one nas to the other. Then you just switch the drive to the new nas. It was very easy to do

I'd say the ds918+

What’s best 4bay nas? I have too many gb!

I overheard my wife saying about getting lots of different things in her slot even though they were all different sizes. This must have been what she was talking about.

These were the ones. The first 1GB SD-Card that I bought set me back 54 notes, later I bought a 2GB SD-Card when the prices dropped but then discovered that my expensive 24" Dell 2407WFP (£415) Monitor with built in Card-Reader could only read up to 1GB cards. What a pisser but got one from Banggood that did HDSD-Cards for something silly like 7p.

I have an old Card-Reader that can read 54 card types including the 1GB mini hard-drives.
