Octopus Tracker Tariff (February 2023)

I have created a discussion for folks that have already moved to the Octopus Tracker Tariff so we can continue to discuss this outside of the posted deal and ask for opinions when we think is the time to move away from the tariff etc.

Developer of Octopus Watch here. Octopus Energy have not released the prices yet for today. If you see prices such as 15p for gas it is because whichever place you are seeing them from is using a legacy API to get the prices. That API is filled with bogus values for all future dates. I don't know the exact prices myself, but you should expect them to be slightly higher than yesterday based on gas market results. Not three times as much.

Does Octopus Watch display the data for the Tracker tariff, or just for Agile?

If you have the Octopus app, scroll down and click on 'Contact us', then click on the email 'hello@octopus.energy'.

It will then redirect you to your email client and it will prefill all your account details for you in a email template, makes it easier than manually typing everything out when emailing them.

    Hope that helps

Folks please read the FAQs and understand when the EPG discount is applied on the tracker tariff.

"The Government’s Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) offers a 33.43p / kWh against your electricity unit rates, and a 6.7p / kWh discount against your gas unit rates.

The EPG discount will apply whenever Tracker unit rates go above the base EPG level (34p / kWh for electricity and 10.3p / kWh for gas; on average, but this does vary regionally)."

We are essentially on the SVR when the EPG discount is applied until the Tracker unit rates are above 67.43p and 17.0p for electricity and gas respectively. That is when we will pay more than the SVR.

This means we do not need to move to the SVR when the tracker tariff is at the base EPG level.

Note - the base EPG level will change in April.

And another takeaway with this is not to panic. There was just one day (Dec. 12th) since this tariff was recreated (Nov. 17th) when the electricity tariff broke the OFGEM cap making it more expensive, and it was a lot more expensive, 43p vs 33p, but only for one day. The following day it was back fully covered by the EPG, and back below EPG saving money just a week later.

If there's some change in the wholesale gas market that warrants abandoning ship, the news is going to be your best guide not obsessing over checking the rate every single day.

I joined up to a Telegram bot based on a suggestion here (OctopusDailyProceTracker), which has been working well, up until it stopped sending prices through a few days ago.

Does anyone else use this bot? Is it still working for them? Does anyone know who supports this bot as I have no idea how I can report a problem.

If you join the Octo-Aid Discord and switch on notifications for your region, you'll receive daily price notifications and a weekly summary. I've been using it for a couple of months and it's great.

I posted a link a few minutes ago and it got removed but you should be able to find your way to it via Google.
  7. killabyte's avatar
Dunno if it would be a good idea to create a shared spreadsheet and update the daily prices? or has someone already done that??
    Shorty6's avatar
There is a website that's basically doing this already, just google "my smart energy" go onto their website and select your rough location from the tracker drop down at the top of the page (would give a link but the page bans it). Just check to make sure these figures match what's on your octopus app today then you should be good to just use that, I've bookmarked it on my work PC so will check most mornings. It gives you the last months data including todays, not sure when it updates but was there at 8 this morning when I first checked. (edited)

Posting this in case it helps anyone else.
I was struggling to find a good way of seeing daily prices easily on my android phone.
I wanted a version of dashboards.energy-stats.uk/ I could show as a widget on my home screen. I found an app called Widgetify (there are probably others, but this worked) and set up 3 widgets to show the prices and graph.

No need to work it out. Just keep an eye on the unit rate and make sure it is below the standard variable rate/ energy cap which is around 34p and 10.5p for electricity and gas respectively.

Note the price cap will change in April. (edited)

I don’t have a smart meter so could people advise on how often they feel I should submit meter readings please. Will once a month be adequate or should I do it daily?
    tonyawesome69's avatar
    Author
You should be aware everytime you submit a meter reading, it triggers an energy bill. I think once or twice per month is sufficient

Do you obtain these figures from your Octopus dashboard?
  20. qwertymz's avatar
With the tracker, what do you see on your smart meter? Mine is showing gas usage of 16kwh - but £2, which looks wrong.
    emontes's avatar
Octopus is not able to update the tariffs on the smart meter daily so you have an old tariff either for electricity and gas but they won't use the tariff on the smart meter to bill you, they just pull the usage and do the billing with the right tariff on their side.
Meter monitor wise, I changed to show kw consumed instead of the amount seeing the calculation using the meter will be wrong.
  21. wpj's avatar
Well, we have the first official bill (for 2 days) using the smart meter and this tariff; our projected annual cost has reduced from £3400 to £2200.
Let's hope these low prices stay.

"low prices"? it's still over double. i was paying 1.9p for gas and 9p for elec only a couple of years ago.

I just changed to this tariff after seeing this post. The advisor on the phone was trying to tell me that the prices can change on a half hourly basis! I had to point out to her that the wording on their website says it will be updated daily. Which is correct?
    deleted9453's avatar
She was getting confused with Agile
  24. Conkers816's avatar
This all seems a bit scary at the moment. I've been speaking to someone on the phone about the current tracker prices and the unit rates certainly do work out cheaper than what i'm currently paying but it's the variable and, for want of a better word, "random", nature of it that's causing me some consternation - probably more down to my autism than anything else to be fair.

I must confess to having second thoughts as things with eon were a lot simpler ..
    justonemore's avatar
Leave this one out I would say but I have faith in HotDeals that one of us will shout up if we feel prices are going to sky rocket

Some comments on the deal page say that you're charged based on the daily average. However, customer support over email said to me that I'll be charged based on the monthly average. I'm on a smart meter and I did tell them that. Some other people reported similar replies on the deal page. Any thoughts about this?

Emailed this morning to switch from flexible to tracker. How long do they usually take to respond? Never contacted them before 2 days ago when I also enquired about updating my meters to smet2.

My electric is smet2 already as in a new build house as of 2020 but it's never acted smart. No idea what the gas one is but it ain't smart lol.

Ok - day 2 tariffs out now as Tracker Rates change everyday & is after midight so I have in the south..

increase of Electricity 0.78p/kWh to 24.07p/kWh
increase of Gas 0.13p/kWh to 7.09p/kWh

    verdict = Negligible

    Points to note

"The EPG discount will apply whenever Tracker unit rates go above the base EPG level (34p / kWh for electricity and 10.3p / kWh for gas; on average, but this does vary regionally)"

"The Government’s Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) offers a 17.9p / kWh discount against your electricity unit rates, and a 6.7p / kWh discount against your gas unit rates."
    porthos2020's avatar
So this means the figure to watch out for is 51.9p for electricity and 17p for gas?
  32. deleted2808586's avatar
Just got off the phone to them, they've sent me an email to sign up but the prices seem a lot higher,
    49461059-C1FT2.jpg
    deleted9453's avatar
IGNORE the rates sent on email - they just quote based on the wholesale off flexible (ie the price before the EPG). This has been covered hundreds of times.

The prices today are 7p and 23p. Not 53p and 15p.

Does anyone know how soon my SMETS2 smart meter will become active with Octopus?

I've switched over from Shell and my supply date is the 3rd (today) the usage screen in the Octopus app shows "uh-oh looks like we can't connect to your meter".

I've also manually submitted my starting meter readings today. (edited)
    Rawat's avatar
For anyone who may be wondering about how soon their smart meter will start working - I've just spoken to Octopus who've said that it can take upto 14 working days from your supply date to get working properly, and with their great customer service I have no doubt 1 call should fix the issue if it hasn't already been sorted by then

For those that switch keep an eye on your direct debit payment amount. I switched and they increased my DD and I was unable to reduce it again. I emailed them (on the back of my switch email) and they changed it to the previous amount.
    tonyawesome69's avatar
    Author
Alternatively you can request to have variable direct debit i.e. pay what you use each month rather than a set amount
  36. Phillpot's avatar
Phoned up twice to switch and they just send the link to the website that when I go to sign up just offers the flexible one or asks to create another direct debit. Sent two emails as well that didn't get an answer. Will try again...

According to people who are on a smart meter & on the tracker you still pay an average rate for the month. I've seen screenshots proving it on the FB page. Their usage per day is right, but it still all added up and given an average rate for the month.
I'm on tracker & no smart meter. it gives an estimated usage for each day (all around the same, which isn't how it is obviously) & the unit rate for each day. Adds it all up and gives an average unit rate which is used to work out the total. so identical billing procedure.
    tonyawesome69's avatar
    Author
The average unit rate is only used at the summary page for representation only. Look at the breakdown page for total cost figure using daily rate and the figure used in the summary, it is the exact same therefore using daily rate.
