Royal Mail 1st class stamp going up to £1.35, 2nd class to 85p.

Surely this is counter productive, people will use the service even less. Only a couple of years ago 1st class was 95p.BBC News - First class stamp price to rise again to £1.35, says Royal Mail

We use second class post now. Tried it several times, posting two letters to same address at same time - second class post arrived first in all cases except one when they all arrived the same day.

Did you by any chance post the letter to yourself ?

Unfortunately, it's what they want. No other company wants to takeover an expensive letters business and now their privatised, it makes sense to smash the prices up as government aren't interested in changing the universal service obligation where we have to deliver post 6 days a week. I'm literally walking around talking to customers on a Monday and Tuesday as the mail is so light on them days! Surely, it makes sense to drop to 5 days letters! But this is Royal Mail and everything takes about 5 years to change.

I agree. I can't see the real need of 6 days letter delivery...

It's an antiquated service which we don't actually need anymore. Think about what the majority of the post you receive is. Is it something other than junk mail? Is it something that could have been sent via email, text, or viewed in an app? Is it something that any courier company could have delivered as a one off? They need to rethink their strategy. Post boxes aren't needed any more. They could cut back on the number of on foot mail people. Focus on a competitive packages and parcels delivery service with their infrastructure and brand power.

No-one can compete with the letter service. Even companies like Whistle use Royal Mail as the last mile service.
Who else will distribute a letter over 500 miles away for £1.35?

I was a motorcycle courier just as the fax started getting popular. Now that was a system that turned the various delivery services on their heads. The bleating at the time was numbing, yet the postal service is still here, but immediate delivery has all but died

Soon be cheaper to visit the recipient than send them a letter

These price rises are outrageous, especially during an economic downturn

    Govt should intervene (edited)

Completely agree! It'll be cheaper to send via a taxi soon lol!

It's impressive that they are still in business - to me I can understand the price increase is necessary and you are getting a lot of service for that amount.

    Its pure greed.

Why should the people subsidise a private entity ?

So I've been pretty loyal to RM for the past years but...

Have any other sellers ditched RM for yodel/inpost/evri and been pleasantly surprised by the service? What's the failure rate like? I don't know how many more increases I can take before my business folds.

I use Yodel via parcel2go uninsured for under 1kg. Previous to that I used Evri.
1-2kg I use RM second class.
Anything I want insured I send by RM tracked 48.
The only problems I've had are with customers not being in, or claiming their parcel hasn't arrived because the eBay tracking is slower than the courier's. I've only ever had one lost parcel that eventually made it's way back to me after Evri paid out on the insurance.
I've posted around 600 parcels over the last year
