M&s isn't that cheap. Tk max is better value if you have a store near you.

Hey OP, it might be worth adding to your discussion what the event the smart clothes are for so the community can recommend based off this, For example for an interview?

In my experience there is sometimes a difference between cheap and value.
I used to get my work suits from Next. Not the cheapest but my no means the most expensive. They were also of a good quality and a pretty good cut.
I'm a fan of the dark suit. Its good for weddings, funerals and interviews.
I think 'dress' shirts can safely be bought from tesco and sainsburys etc unless you're going to wear them every day.
However I also think that spending money on a good tie goes a long way. They just look so much better and the knots are easier to do in my opinion.
M and S are still the king of officewear in this country. But their quality varies massively I've found.

I absolutely agree, and have noticed this myself.

Surprisingly, Primark's mens 100% cotton dress shirts are actually good quality, and very good value for money.

Neither Tesco or Sainsbury's have the range and style of shirts that Primark offers, unless one is looking for the bog standard office white and blue shirts.

TKMaxx can be really hit and miss with what is in stock. Often they seem to be seconds and sizing can be out.

TK Maxx probably the best bet, but it's pot luck what's available at the time you go.

M&S clothes are very poor quality these days, used to always buy my work (office) clothes from there but they went massively downhill around 5 years ago.

What's your definition of "affordable"? How often would you be wearing this stuff? Affordable and long lasting is a rare combination.
