Was going to build a new PC last year, but held off until now! Current build is 8 years now!
Still think, the AM5 gear is still pricy at the moment, so looking at the AM4 structure (again)!
I like the x570 boards for along time, but notcied the B550 should be able to handle the 5900X AM4 chip.
Don't game much (still on snowrunner and not finished Dragon Age)
Going 12 core mainly for a million tasks and not much in the price (since the prices have fallen).
1. x570 harder to get these boards, will the asrock B550 steel legend handle the 5900x?
2. Memory is also cheap, going for 32/64gb - what speed??
3. Cooler?, had the hyper 212 before - not interested in watercooling - What's the min needed to cover the 12 core chip?
4. Old psu was 850w, so going to recycle
5. Case NZXT flow or corsair 4000D (black) no colour bling stuff
5. GPU - not decided, anything cheap with 12gb should be ok
Any advice on the B550/5900x combo or can a x570 do the trick, but the latest hardware might push it towards the B550

Firstly decide what functionality on the motherboard is important/must have for you, don't just base it on chipset name. You can get a decent B650 board for well under £200, and 32GB of DDR5 6400 C32 RAM for ~£100, add that to a 7700 or 7700X, which is a similar cost to the 5900X, and you've got a solid platform that will be easy to upgrade and significantly faster for a lot of tasks.
Don't just assume more cores = faster even for content creation this isn't always true. - pugetsystems.com/lab…56/
£435 for an AM4 platform with a B550 board, or £90 more for an AM5 platform that will lend itself to a much longer lifespan.
If you are really struggling to justify the extra investment, you could just grab a used CPU or wait for one of the eBay sales, or maybe even the 7900x goes back to £249 on Amazon again. (curious).
It sounds like you know what you are talking about.. RAM isnt too expensive now and price diff between DDR speeds are generally very tolerable?
I tend to buy used to maximise my value, though a lot of people frown on that or like everything brand new which is fair enough."},{"@type":"Comment","@id":"https://www.hotukdeals.com/comments/permalink/52423632","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"001Cisco"},"datePublished":"2024-03-20T13:37:47.000Z","text":"What is the main use?
The main question is how likely would you upgrade CPU, say 3-4 years down the line."},{"@type":"Comment","@id":"https://www.hotukdeals.com/comments/permalink/52433092","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"B3aver"},"datePublished":"2024-03-21T18:54:10.000Z","text":"With you wanting a 5900x you’d be better just paying a bit more in some cases less for am5 on awd-it the upgrade bundles aren’t too bad a 7700 with a crappy b650 board is £329.99 them some ram for £400 you’ll pay roughly that for am4 if you need ram.
