About this deal

Selling pre-owned clothes is now free for UK based private sellers, which means you’ll no longer have to pay transaction fees (final value fee and regulatory operating fee) when these items sell.

All items listed in clothing categories on ebay by UK private sellers are eligible for free selling. This excludes categories such as accessories, hats, footwear, watches, bags and jewellery. Selling pre-owned clothes on ebay.co.uk is now free for UK based private sellers, which means you’ll no longer have to pay transaction fees (final value fee and regulatory operating fee) when these items sell.

For clothes listings, private sellers will only incur fees for any of the following:

  • Optional listing upgrades
  • Sending items internationally
  • Using Promoted Listings to place advertisements

What are pre-owned clothes?

Pre-owned clothes are items you no longer want or need in a variety of conditions, for example an outfit that no longer fits, an unwanted gift, or vintage fashion that needs a new home. These items can be new or used. Selling clothing for free on eBay is a great way to make some extra cash.

Is it free to sell internationally?

If you sell an item of pre-owned clothing and the delivery address entered at checkout is outside the UK, you won’t be charged transaction fees, however you’ll still be charged an international fee.

Items listed on other eBay marketplaces, for example, ebay.com or ebay.fr, will be subject to selling fees as defined for those marketplaces.

Perhaps HMRC new rules are having an impact?
    Fatal.Swan's avatar
There are no new HMRC rules - the tax rules are the same as always, except there are now automatic reporting requirements on platforms like eBay. Though yes, no doubt this will be having an impact on eBay as occasional sellers will be wary of being 'reported to HMRC' despite selling your second hand items being exempt from tax.

I stopped selling on eBay as I had a few demand refunds or money off or they would give me bad feedback. Or say they hadn’t received it even when I had photo proof that it was on their doorstep.
    Not worth the hassle. (edited)

Me too. Bitten far too many times by buyers.

It's because people are selling clothes on vinted for no fees

Vinted isn't *really* direct competition is it? I've bought from both and Vinted's three low resolution photos and crap descriptions are usually pretty useless an indication of what you're getting compared with the standard on eBay.

Besides, Vinted does have a (optional) seller protection fee, it's just the buyer paying instead. eBay now has neither. (edited)

But ebay will grass you up as soon as you sell 30 items!
    Bendown's avatar
I am very careful what I sell on that platform now, No way do I want to get in to a situation where I am having to prove that I am selling thing at a loss just because HMRC wants to get their hands on more of my money, added to that you are constantly risking being scammed. As an example I now have an iPhone to sell but will send to a recycler rather than risk being shafted on ebay (edited)

Only included are new and used clothes. New clothes with tags are included.
Not included are: accessories, hats, footwear, watches, bags and jewellery.

But still great to keep clothes out of landfill, reduce waste and recycle perfect useable items. (edited)
    PaulHilaryDelahay's avatar
Such a shame it doesn’t include shoes 😔

eBay is just expensive and painful to sell on. If they kept the fee low and sensible and didn't favour the buyer in disputes over absolutely anything it'd still be decent. Only worthwhile for businesses now apart from when the percentage off fee deals crop up for private sellers. I used to sell loads on there and get great interaction, lucky if I get 2 or 3 prople view an item that's been on for weeks now. Vinted all the way, no fee, quick and easy (edited)
    chunatunks's avatar
I have very few views on items recently. Seemed to coincide with them offering to 'promote' them for an additional fee.

I stopped using eBay years ago when it became flooded with resellers and businesses. It used to be great for me as a 'car boot sale', but I'm not interested in a flea market type model. Same with Amazon sadly.
  8. chigger1's avatar
Flea bay is absolutely rubbish as a platform. Been mostly a buyer but suddenly my account has been permanently suspended without the reason being disclosed in multiple calls.

Also not returned a refund for a purchase that the seller cancelled. So they are also keeping purchase funds also

Good riddance to a rubbish platform that is ripping off Sellers/Buyers.

The tax man cometh for your pennies.
    markgh's avatar
The rules apply to catch those buying and selling £1000s for the purposes of profit. I.e. people running a business who should be paying tax anyway!

HMRC don't care that you've made £27 selling your old jeans on Vinted.
  10. niaomi.nim's avatar
Used clothing doesn’t sell well on eBay imo. I used to list loads and hardly ever got any views. EBay are gonna care even less about that category now. I wouldn’t give up on Vinted just yet. (edited)

Not tried Vinted but I have a Depop which is focused on clothes. All the clothes I had on eBay I also listed on Depop in the last year and they all sold on eBay lol...

Does it include the sale of footware??

    Footwear?

HMRC rules have just scared off most of their sellers. Doesn’t matter if your are a private seller, if you make any kind of money selling anything on eBay - you will be reported to HMRC.
  13. Darter's avatar
I don't know if this has been mentioned already but it is very likely that all item selling fees for private sellers in the UK will be a thing of the past soon. The private seller listing and final value fees were abolished on ebay Germany over a year ago. It is widely anticipated this will also be the case for the UK.
    Index's avatar
That’s the way the platform makes money, through seller fees. Well that’s the way I see it anyways.

Tbh eBay has been excellent over the years when selling and buying items. I have used Facebook, gumtree, shpock etc, which for me has been a complete waste of time due to scammers, time wasters and dodgy tw***. eBay has a massive customer base and generally has a verification process. It's not flawless, but much better than the others.
    maddoglewis's avatar
It servers a purpose but it's certainly in decline. FB Marketplace is full of scammers

Hello ebay, I’d like to sell my wearable Playstation 5 825GB White Disc Edition
  16. Polar1's avatar
Ebay are planning on scrapping all the existing fee structures and introducing several tiers with one overall service fee to pay, these will incorporate processing, various customer services, and include the delivery charge using Ebays own delivery service.
    The_narrow_path's avatar
Could you please link a source for these planned changes? Thanks.

My recent experience is that buyers aren't using ebay much these days either. far fewer viewers, watchers and buyers than I used to get. (edited)
  19. Envx's avatar
Ebay is awful for sellers. The sooner they go under the better. Their system does not favour the seller and you're rinsed and extorted at every turn.
    niaomi.nim's avatar
Couldn’t agree more. Ebay only protects buyers.
  20. lucas's avatar
Finally after all these years of being ripped off by scammers on eBay I get to be ripped off fee free
  21. Lupus1462's avatar
Ebay got so greedy and supported the buyer even when clearly should support seller. Vinted has stepped in and sorted them
    Easthighland's avatar
exactly, it was the seller who paid the service fee and they got zero protection.
  22. Chimppimp1987's avatar
Too little too late. You've lost that business to vinted
  23. jalaldevil's avatar
Looks like Vinted has eaten into their profits.
    Abdul_Meshwari's avatar
I would have to disagree. Myself, 3 family members, and others I have spoken to anecdotally, are completely unable to use Vinted, for the simple reason it refuses to let people add a debit card as payment method.
A quick look on various help forums brings up what must be hundreds, if not thousands of people who have the same problem. Vinted's own help forums has in excess of 50+ pages of people with this exact problem - namely that they signed up, created accounts, but are unable to use the site to buy or sell items.. not one of them incidentally, has reported getting any form of help whatsoever from Vinted's [so-called] "customer service."
  24. JC7's avatar
Sell on vinted much better for used clothes
    reformedEffortMaker's avatar
I guess that’s why eBay have made this decision?
  25. MADNAN's avatar
Bye bye eBay...we sell clothes on vinted now!
  26. misterboumsong's avatar
Ebay deserves everything they get been greedy beyond belief even taking a cut of your postage and packing on top of the final sale fee. Absolute disgusting and almost treat you the seller as a criminal
    robbiet's avatar
They take a cut of the postage as people were abusing the system. Charging say £1 for the item and £20 postage to avoid fees.

It’s those people that forced eBay into charging fees on postage too.
  27. strawhat's avatar
Seems EBay is following depops footsteps as they had removed their fees for good the other week.
  28. ashyt16turbo's avatar
Cue the wearable mobile phones, games, electrical equipment and car parts.
    TwoJs's avatar
Haha I'd like to think the eBay algorithms pick stuff like that up and delete the listing.
  29. ClarkGriswoldJnr's avatar
Vinted been doing this from day 1. EBay always ripped off seller including charging their fees on p&p too. My wife sells on Vinted and she loves it. Very easy to use and seamless.
    uchman365's avatar
People were taking the p with p&p on ebay. Used to be common to see items for 99p plus £30 postage
  30. dsutton21's avatar
I’m guessing there losing a lot from places like Vinted so had no choice but to
  31. lukemack's avatar
The continued rise of Vinted and confusion/panic over hmrc rules.

Depop went free fees (well vastly reduced) recently trying to claw back users, eBay is still the king when it comes to selling though
  32. skip112's avatar
Too little, too late. Vinted and the like are ahead of the game!
  33. airwrks's avatar
So pre owned includes new clothing with tags as long as you are a private seller?
  34. engelstein's avatar
Careful you don’t sell more than about 30 clothes items or the tax man will be all over you! I’m sticking to gumtree and marketplace for selling since eBay did this
    whatyadoin's avatar
its not just ebay, its a legal requirement for online digital selling platforms across europe to share this data with the tax authority [incl. ebay airBnB just eat, vinted/ etsy / amazon etc]

gumtree and marketplace are currently excluded as they dont manage the payment/money aspect these other selling platforms have .

I saw this coming. Vinted ate eBay's market share.

Ebay is dying anyway and everyone knows it. No number of hot HUKD deals will save them from their failure to innovate, and their horrendous customer service.

They lost me as a seller when they charged me a shipping admin fee for something I sold that was collected in person, and customer service literally laughed at me when I queried it.

Shopping on ebay is a tedious chore now because experienced sellers manipulate their listings making searching for something far too time consuming, and Ebay ignore the problem.
  38. glaspark's avatar
eBay's awful treatment of its customers has had a huge impact on its business. I hardly ever use them anymore but once used them daily. Serve's them right, anytime I had a problem they were useless and only PayPal ever gave me assistance.

Vinted simplified selling used clothing. Creating an eBay listing is always a pain. That's why it got unpopular.
    HottUKDealer's avatar
Saw some resellers saying it’s 1 min to list on Vinted vs 5 mins on eBay. If you’re doing it for a living that’s a big difference

eBay need to stop it with the Item Specifics BS as well
