Here’s a summary of the article titled “Why I quit Royal Mail” by Gareth Roberts:

  • Workplace Reality: The author describes the Royal Mail depot as a dilapidated and technology-deprived environment, with overworked staff and high turnover. The once efficient service is now struggling with outdated equipment and impossible targets.
  • Service Decline: Privatization is cited as a cause for the decline, with a focus on profit over service, leading to prioritization of parcels from major retailers over regular mail.
  • Staff Experience: Employees face physical strain and low morale, with many injuries and accidents reported. The author himself left due to the stressful conditions and a sense of disillusionment with the institution’s direction.
The article paints a grim picture of the current state of the Royal Mail, highlighting the challenges faced by its employees and the impact of organizational changes on its services.

I'm sure like most things, there are elements of truth in many of the things reported in the article. Almost everything has an angle, but it doesn't mean it's all nonsense. My personal experience as a customer is that RM has been going down hill fast over the years.

I remember growing up and seeing the same postie for what seemed like forever (over 10 years anyhow). Since I moved 4/5 years ago, the longest postie on my route was around 3 months. Different face every week and the level of service as a result is abysmal. Not the posties fault.

Letters side of it seems dead. I doubt there is as much profit in it as there are in parcel contracts with large companies (such as Amazon). I will do everything I can to avoid using RM, both as sender and receiver. My trust in them is at an all time low.

Something drastically needs to change for them to survive or function at an acceptable level.

You have to remember working for Royal Mail was an amazingly cushy job for decades, so when they complain of stress and overwork they are just getting a glimpse of the real world. When i used to get daily parcel collections it wasn't unusual for the driver to be sat outside waiting an hour for my collection time.

The problem with Royal Mail is the unions and staff fight against changes that would make them competitive.

Imo that article is rubbish, I know plenty who work there and that's not the feedback I get.

I work for RM and it’s not THAT bad, it’s not great and I agree the infrastructure needs a drastic overhaul and the vans are a right mess as they have no money to replace them anymore.

I agree with some of the comments that the unions do hamper progression; and the posties are seriously against losing the long term benefits. However no jobs offer the 8-2, 9-3 shifts anymore, and it’s certainly not uncommon to not be paid for recurring sicknesses.

It's not too bad if you've got seniority. But if you're new coming in, you will have fewer benefits and have to work weekends, lates, etc. He has it nailed on about the vans. Most are over 13 years old and definitely need a new fleet. Some of the ideas the management come up with are daft though (Don't get me started on snow shovels to empty parcels out of new plastic back breaking containers) The worse is yet to come as they are changing hours all over the country and some offices will be going over their family friendly times of 3pm so it puts alot of people with kids at a loss whether to jack it in or try to pay for childcare.

My postman is the happiest guy you could meet , even wears shorts in the rain .

I think Royal Mail are brilliant at what they do . Especially the service where they collect your parcel and even put the label on for you
