fire alarm recommendations?

Hi, we are doing a small bathroom extension and the building inspector was at our house, they said we would need 3 smoke alarms connected to the mains.

Speaking to the electrician, they are saying we need a mains wireless interlinked smoke alarm as these would be attached near a light and no rewiring needed. The one they recommended was an aico ei3028 and smart link module. for 3 of each, he said it would cost £300 just for the units

Anyone have any recommendations or advice.

From memory, I have answered questions on fire alarms a couple of times and recommended Aico alarms each time.

From memory, the first post was a few years ago and the Aico's were expensive then and, like everything else, have shot up in price.

I kitted out several properties, based on my electricians recommendation, some with just hard wired alarms and some with a mixture of hard wired and wireless alarms.

The Aico's I chose had a 10 year life and, to save money, I bought from eBay sellers. However, be aware, Aico state they won't honour the guarantee on products bought from non-authorised sellers but, for the money saved, I felt it was worth taking the risk.

To date, have not had any issues. Like anything in life, you get what you pay for.

If I can find my previous post(s), I will edit this reply to link it.

EDIT: Search for "smoke alarms" to see previous threads some with my replies in them. (edited)

I think HUKDs have disabled searching beyond a set time period of sorts.

It is certainly different to how it used to be. It is probably to stop people dragging up out of context quotes from years ago that have zero meaning today

I had to rip out my mains powered alarm, because it was next to a light ..

every time the light got even just warm, the alarm would go off ..

and then things got worse, when it started going off, at like 3am every night .. it was about 10cm from the light

however, I had renovations 3 years ago, and the new ones they put in, all seem to be mains powered, with one battery one, the firemen folk put in, they are all about 12” from lights ..

I can’t tell you how much it cost, but your quote sounds steep, but you can’t put a price on life

Yeah that’s true you can’t put a price on life. £300 were the units only. £50 for each fire alarm and £50 for the wireless connection so all can go off. Thought the price for just these seems like I’m missing something

interesting you say the heat from the light caused them to go off? We’ve got leds but I’ll make sure to have them installed further away or else same as the one recommended was for both heat and smoke.

    thank you

So, you are you questioning building regs or the cost?

Obviously a wired system is going to cost more than £20. Did you ask the electrician if he could do it cheaper but still meet the regulations?

I’m not complaining about regulations. I’m just not familiar with smoke alarms and not sure if the electrician was trying to sell me an overpriced fire alarm or if they actually cost this much.

the cost was not for the labour just the units themselves. He said £50 for each fire alarm and £50 for each of the wireless connections to each. So, £300 for the units in total. Although the actual one he showed me was more expensive in screfix etc.

Nest Protect smoke and CO alarm works very well. Easy to install and monitor. Regularly pops up at £70-75 price here on hukd. (edited)
