Kingston's A400 solid-state drive dramatically improves the responsiveness of your existing system with incredible boot, loading and transfer times compared to mechanical hard drives. Powered by a latest-gen controller for read and write speeds of up to 500MB/s and 450MB/s, this SSD is 10x faster than a traditional hard drive for higher performance, ultra-responsive multi-tasking and an overall faster system.

Also more reliable and durable than a hard drive, A400 is built with Flash memory. There are no moving parts, making it less likely to fail than a mechanical hard drive. It's also cooler and quieter, and its shock and vibration resistance makes it ideal for notebooks and other mobile computing devices.

A400 is available in Multiple capacities from 120GB-480GB2 to give you all the space you need for applications, videos, photos and other important documents. You can also replace your hard drive or a smaller SSD with a drive big enough to hold all your files.

This SSD is designed for use in desktop and notebook computer workloads, and is not intended for server environments.

    Yes google.co.uk

Sorry couldn't resist. It depends on your Motherboard manufacturer but it'll be an option in bios. Windows also supports it although it's not something I've done since Windows 7.

Depends on the laptop - some make their hard drive bays easy to access, typically via a removable cover on the base - others require you to open the laptop completely, sometimes needing to disconnect quite fiddly/delicate ribbon connectors from the keyboard and motherboard.

If your laptop has a hdd slot under it very easy. Look for a panel screwed in. Otherwise it's still easy buy full disassembly can be tricky on modern laptops.

I prefer Sandisk, the Sandisk has a very light casing but is still sturdy, runs cool. Remember, 'Sandisk Plus' is more a badge, the technology inside changes as things change, so it's moved from MLC to TLC, but kept the same branding. It's Sandisk's (WD now) way of marketing their latest main-stream SSD under the same name. Each to their own though.

The reason you'd buy the branded drive now over say a cheapy (still very well made) Integral Series 5 SSD, is software they provide, type of hardware encryption on offer. If Crucial (or whoever) started offering Paragon Microsoft NTFS 15 for free, that would be a game changer for me. Great bit of software but expensive per machine, Seagate used to offer it for free.

Not tried returning a Sandisk (a good sign), but if it offers the same support as WD on their hard drives, that's certainly a plus too. WD has an express service where you register a credit card and they send out the replacement before having to return the old, so you're up and running a lot quicker (assuming you have a good backup). Fail to return the old one, they charge you (which is fair enough), (edited)

Yeah, to be honest I just got one of my mates to cause a distraction while I switched them out...people were easier to impress back then!

Thanks everyone for the advice. One last thing, does anyone have any experience returning to eBuyer? I was looking at getting a Toshiba external hd from there anyway, but was waiting to see if there's a better deal on black Friday. If I'm getting both I'm thinking to buy now and return if there is a better deal?

Out of interest...... For the same price would 2 x 480GB not be faster …Out of interest...... For the same price would 2 x 480GB not be faster since they can be accessed simultaneously?

Generally, it's not worth the hassle...

    1. A 960GB drive will often have twice as many flash modules as the 480GB equivalent. In that respect, it's already 'more RAIDed' than the smaller drive and will usually have better performance as a result.

    2. NVMe delivers over 5x the throughput of SATA, so why bother with RAIDing SATA (unless it's for availability, in which case you've be looking at RAID 1, 5, 6 or 10)

    3. RAID 0 with two drive doubles the chance of loosing your data due to drive failure (probably more of an issue with spinning disks, but once bitten, etc. etc.)

So people should be aware that this SSD (A400) and the Sandisk SSD Plus are both Dram-less models.

In all honesty, unless it is just used as a storage drive or as a game drive, I can't recommend going dram-less. Especially not for an OS drive.

Here's a 5 min video by Linus from Linustechtips explaining what Dram-less means:

Would this improve my PS4 performance?

Only loading times. Ps4 will boot much faster and be more responsive in os. Ingame depends on games. Some you will find hardly any difference and some, like destiny, I found to have huge decrease in loading times. We talking about 30 sec loading time vs 90sec.
