    It took me about 9 months to go from level 25 to 40 in September, then the grind turned from big to fricking enormous (with the added requirement of set tasks that you need to fully complete to increase your level) so I stopped playing. There are plenty of ways to get xp fast though, one of the easiest ways is to get a ton of friends and keep opening gifts daily. Battles are another way to get good xp but you are facing whales with perfect IV pokemon (a useful resource for checking Pokemon IVs pvpivs.com/ , any Pokemon in the top 5 IVs is worth evolving, using TMs for the best attack/defence and boosting the CP for battle to stand a chance).
